NWSL to eliminate draft, guarantee contracts, and grant unrestricted free agency to all players. After more than 9 million people tuned in to watch the U.S. Women’s National Team take home gold in soccer at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, we at Sixth Street are reminded once again how monumental the past year has been for women’s sports. From incredible performances on the field and the court, to landmark deals across media, infrastructure, and investment, the women’s sports movement is hitting its stride right before our eyes. But despite all the momentum and all the positive data, our message today is more guarded: women’s sports as a movement has only reached base camp, and there’s a big piece of the puzzle that needs to be unlocked before it can get to the next level. We’re talking about the one major group trailing the rest of the ecosystem, yet to wake up and get in the game for real: corporate sponsors.
