For the first time in almost 15 years, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) re-opened the Section 8 application lottery last month for one week only. This Federally funded program covers 60%-70% of rent for low-income New Yorkers with a voucher. In New York City, where most tenants are considered rent- burdened, meaning they spend at least 30% of their income on housing, having this level of stability can be transformative for a family. Over the course of the week NYCHA received over 633,000 applications. NYCHA will randomly select 200,000 households to receive vouchers. With only a week’s notice before the enrollment window opened, Nazareth Housing jumped into action to be sure we would be ready to assist our community. We reached out to our community members through email, social media, phone calls, with information on the enrollment period. We also offered in-person support: helping those who aren't comfortable using technology or lack a computer to complete the application out as well as helping those who don't have an email account (a requirement for anyone wanting to sign up for the list) create one. Over the course of the one-week enrollment period, we helped 58 families apply for the Section 8 lottery list. But the work doesn’t stop here. Nazareth Housing’s team in the Housing Stability Support Program (HSSP)'s team will follow up with all new individuals and households we met. We will invite them in for a full intake to assess if they would benefit from our additional services, including access to our food pantry, eviction prevention support, or enrollment in public benefits such as SNAP or public assistance. This opportunity also gave us a chance to check in with our current clients and, most importantly, deepen our connection to the community. This is why the work we do matters. And we couldn’t do it without you, our generous supporters.

A big thank you to the amazing team from Morgan Stanley who rolled up their sleeves and volunteered several hours helping us clean, pack and organize our basement storage units. Their efforts made a huge impact – and now we can maximize the space more efficiently and easily find our seasonal holiday supplies. And, a huge thanks to Jeannette Dahl for helping to organize her colleagues at Morgan Stanley. #HomelessnessPrevention #volunteer

Earlier this month, our team was able to come together for an early celebration of the end of the program and fiscal year. We are scattered throughout the city in our various offices, from the Lower East Side to the Bronx, so having the opportunity to be in the same place and connect with one another is just one of the amazing things about working at Nazareth Housing. We also got to celebrate our dear colleague Ramona’s retirement. To say that we are grateful for all she has done for Nazareth Housing and for the care and support she provided to our clients is an understatement. We will most certainly miss her (as will our clients!) but are excited for her as she moves into this next phase of her life. 💙 A huge shout out to our event planning committee, Regina, Claudia, and Donna, for making this day so momentous!

Earlier this month, the Housing Stability Support Program staff from the Lower East Side and the Bronx, as well as the staff from Thorpe Family Residence came together to begin to develop Nazareth Housing's new and improved financial empowerment curriculum. Working with Deb Mashek - Do Together Better, our facilitator, and utilizing the team's experience working with our community as well as information we got directly directly from our clients via focus groups and surveys, the team started to dream big about what a rigorous and accessible financial empowerment program could look like. We look forward to sharing the results this summer and most importantly enrolling our clients in the program. #FinancialEmpowerment #HomelessnessPrevention

May is Lower East Side History month, and the Lower East Side is where our story began 40 years ago. Nazareth Housing was founded in 1983 by Sister Marion Agnes as part of the urban homesteading movement on the Lower East Side. At that time, 13 abandoned buildings were rehabilitated to create safe and secure housing for vulnerable community residents. Nazareth Housing developed services of outreach, advocacy, and community empowerment to prevent homelessness. We continue to honor Sister Marion Agnes' commitment to service by helping families to unlock their potential, build pathways out of poverty, and avoid homelessness. #LowerEastSideHistoryMonth #HomelessnessPrevention

Last night’s Annual Benefit was a huge success – thanks to you, our Nazareth Housing community! We raised more than $400,000 (!!) to support our programs and help the people we serve unlock their potential, build pathways out of poverty, and avoid homelessness. Two hundred guests joined us for the special event and helped us celebrate the amazing work being done in our community as well as honor Aaron Marcu and The Breukelein Institute (Community Service Recipient) for their continued support of Nazareth Housing. 🔗 There is still time to make an impact. Each gift, no matter how big or small, is appreciated and allows us to meet the immediate needs of our clients and provide them with the tools and resources to build a solid financial foundation.
