Last Friday, our new friends in the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health in the NC Department of Health and Human Services welcomed our team for an #OSHRontheroad site visit! We were blown away at all of the testing, services, consultation, and training provided at this facility for public and private health providers. Our tour covered all units of the lab and started with the Molecular Epidemiology Unit which provides molecular laboratory testing support for illness and outbreaks. This was where COVID-19 testing began at the beginning of the pandemic in North Carolina! Next on our tour was the environmental science unit where they perform chemical and bacterial analysis of samples to make sure the water💧 and milk🐄🥛we drink is safe and our homes are free of lead. Their newborn screening unit screens over 120,000 newborn specimens annually to provide early detection for life-saving interventions. A team in the microbiology unit tests patient samples from local health departments and hospitals for disease-causing bacteria, parasites, and fungi that make people sick or may include foodborne illness outbreaks. We learned that the virology/serology unit tests everything from the common flu to the Zika virus, diseases carried by mosquitos and ticks, and also houses North Carolina's sole rabies testing laboratory! The Bioterrorism and Emerging Pathogens and Chemical Terrorism Threat labs are ready to respond 24/7 to any suspected threat to public safety such as anthrax, plague, and emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola or mpox.
