A warm welcome to Orlando Hernández Ying, who has been named the museum’s Lapis Curator of the Arts of the Americas 👋 This is the first permanent curatorial role at the museum dedicated to an expanded look at the arts of North, Central, and South America. Hernández Ying began the position in February 2024, and in the coming years, he will have a major role in the full reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection of American art spanning from prehistory to present day. https://lnkd.in/gzfh2PqB

Now on view in NOMA's Besthoff Sculpture Garden: a new work by Thomas J Price! Price’s sculpture, titled "Time Unfolding," 2023, is a nine-foot-tall statue of a woman looking down at her cell phone, seemingly paused in contemplation. The work is part of a series depicting everyday fictional subjects at a monumental scale—combining traditional sculpting and digital technology to question how society projects ideas and expectations through public space.

The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) announced the dedication of its third-floor Japanese art gallery in honor of longtime museum supporters and patrons. The Kurt A. Gitter, MD and Alice Yelen Gitter Gallery will open to the public on Friday, May 10, with a new installation Envisioning Japan: Transformational Gifts from Kurt A. Gitter, MD and Alice Yelen Gitter.

Coming up this week 🌸 NOMA and the Garden Study Club of New Orleans host the popular springtime celebration Art in Bloom Presented by First Horizon. Garden clubs and other creative talents will build innovative floral installations throughout all three floors of NOMA. Floral displays are on view to the public Thursday, March 14–Sunday, March 17, during regular museum hours (10 am–5 pm). The weeklong event includes a patron and preview party, a lecture series and luncheon, and a silent auction to raise funds for NOMA and the Garden Study Club of New Orleans, who have partnered on the highly anticipated event for over 30 years.

Now on view 🍸 "Rebellious Spirits: Prohibition and Resistance in the South "explores the unique methods in which communities in the United States, particularly in New Orleans, dealt with the passage of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which banned alcohol in the country. Through objects including cocktail shakers, drinking glasses, liquor containers, and medicine bottles, "Rebellious Spirits" not only explores the radical changes the Prohibition period instilled within American society’s relationship to alcohol, but also the religious, racial, and economic tensions that stemmed from it. The exhibition looks both at how individuals circumvented Prohibition Era restrictions and how the popular temperance movement advocated for sobriety as a moral and political issue.

Over the past two weeks, over 225 high-schoolers studying AP African American Studies and AP Art History visited Wangechi Mutu's exhibition at NOMA to discuss topics including Afrofuturism and ideas in contemporary art. The students had the special opportunity to do a virtual Q&A with the artist from her studio in Nairobi, Kenya, and directly connected themes from the exhibition to their in-school curriculum.
