Revel in the rhythms and melodies of Carlos Simon’s "Four Black American Dances" when Thomas Wilkins leads the NY Phil in the work, October 17 and 18, as part of our exploration of Afromodernism.    Here’s a taste of the first movement, "Ring Shout," from when Wilkins conducted the Orchestra in it earlier this summer at our Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer. The percussion section leads what the composer calls an “ecstatic, transcendent religious ritual first practiced by enslaved Africans in the West Indies and United States.”   Learn more about “Afromodernism: Music of the African Diaspora” here: https://lnkd.in/gJYKV3tw

✈️ The second stop on the New York Philharmonic’s 2024 tour to China was Nanjing, and the Philharmonic packed quite a bit into less than 48 hours there. 🎻 A quartet of musicians gave a pop-up concert at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center, performing works by Fanny Mendelssohn, Florence Price, and Nina Shekhar, while others took the opportunity to stretch, recharge, and take in the fabulous views of the city. The Orchestra’s sold-out concert on June 30 — at the impressive Jiangsu Grand Theatre — featured works by Mozart and Copland, conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden. From New York City to Guangzhou! ✈️ After a long day of flying, some New York Philharmonic musicians enjoyed the cultural offerings of the bustling city, from fabulous food (it’s the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine) to stunning art and inspiring history. It’s truly been a milestone tour. The NY Phil became the first US orchestra to perform in mainland China since 2019! The visit also marks Jaap van Zweden’s final international tour as the NY Phil's Music Director. He's already conducted symphonies by Brahms, Copland, and Mozart, led the Chinese Premiere of Nina Shekhar’s “Lumina,” and welcomed baritone Thomas Hampson (on the singer’s birthday! 🎂) as the soloist in songs from Mahler’s “Des Knaben Wunderhorn.” Stay tuned for more, including stops in Nanjing and Shanghai!
