Newark Police Chief Emanuel Miranda, joined by Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, conducted this season’s final Wellness Wednesdays, featuring a 1.5 mile run for Police and Community members 18 years and older at Newark City Hall, 920 Broad Street. Wellness Wednesdays runs were designed as police-community fitness events aimed at building participants’ physical and mental health through a weekly outdoor run. If you are under a tornado or severe weather warning: Go to your local news or official social media accounts for updated emergency information. Follow the instructions of state, local and tribal officials. Go to a safe shelter immediately, such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar or a small interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building. Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls. Do not go under an overpass or bridge. You’re safer in a low, flat location. Watch out for flying debris that can cause injury. Use your arms to protect your head and neck. If you can’t stay at home, make plans to go to a public shelter. Plan for your pet. They are an important member of your family, so they need to be included in your family’s emergency plan. The Newark Department of Public Safety dedicated Engine 16/Ladder 8, located at 469 Ferry Street, to fallen Newark Fire Captain Augusto Acabou in a ceremony held at the firehouse he faithfully served. The dedication of Engine 27/Ladder 4, located at 89 Elm Road, where fallen Fire Captain Wayne Brooks, Jr. diligently worked, was also held today. Today, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé, Deputy Director of Police Operations, Chief of Police Emanuel Miranda, Superior Officers Association (SOA) President Captain John Chrystal, Newark Fraternal Order of Police President Detective Jeffrey Weber, and the Newark Police Command Staff, honored two public safety heroes. Safiyullah I. Abdullah and Joseph Muscarella were working at McCarter Highway and Center Street on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, when they witnessed a man attacking Lieutenant Ronald Boyce. The suspect initially asked the Lt. Boyce for a dollar. While Boyce was willingly taking the money out of his pocket, the man struck him with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground, and reaching for the lieutenant’s service weapon. Mr. Abdullah and Mr. Muscarella intervened, saving Boyce’s life. Lt. Boyce was transported to University Hospital for treatment. The suspect, Kasim Lewis, 31, of Newark, was apprehended. He faces charges of aggravated assault upon a police officer, disarming a law enforcement officer, unlawful possession of a weapon, and hindering apprehension. The entire Newark Police Division applauds Mr. Abdullah and Mr. Muscarella for their selfless bravery in coming to the aid of a Newark Police Lieutenant. . Police Chief Miranda presented each hero with a Newark Police T-shirt. The heroes also received a swag bag filled with other gifts. Captain Chrystal, alongside SOA Vice President Sergio Pereira, presented both heroes with plaques.
