The Office of the Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities and Their Families was established by the New Jersey State Legislature in December 2017 – to help make sure that individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities get the services and supports they need and deserve. Signed into law by Governor Chris Christie in January 2018, the Office was made operational when Governor Phil Murphy appointed the first Ombudsman a few months later. The legislation creating the Office outlines specific responsibilities, which can be grouped into 3 categories: - Assisting individuals and families to navigate New Jersey’s system of care to get the services and supports they need and deserve - Working with individuals and families to identify opportunities for improving the system - Helping to ensure that the voice of individuals and families is heard in a meaningful way in decisions that directly affect them as well as in larger policy discussions.

Social Security Press Release: Announcing New Efforts to Simplify SSI Applications The Social Security Administration is announcing a multi-year effort to simplify processes for people applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This effort begins with offering an online, streamlined application for some select applicants starting this December. The initial step – iClaim expansion – aims to establish an entirely online, simplified iClaim application that utilizes user-tested, plain-language questions, prepopulated answers where possible, step-by-step transitions, and other accessible functions. The online application aims to reduce the time spent applying and the processing time for initial claim decisions. NJ's Supreme Court has made a new ruling regarding students with disabilities' access to free appropriate public education. The ruling concerns students who have earned diplomas through the General Education Development test (GED). Since GEDs are not classified as a "regular high school diploma," students with disabilities can reenroll in their local school district after passing the GED and receive the rest of their entitled free appropriate public education. Social Security Updates: The first update modifies the time period that SSA considers when reviewing applicants work history. Rather than needing to provide the past 15 years of work history, an applicant will only need to provide the past 5 years. Additionally, the Administration will no longer consider past employment that lasted shorter than 30 calendar days. The second update pertains to occupation titles that were previously used to support a "not disabled" determination in the application process. The Administration is reviewing 114 occupations that will no longer be used to deny qualification for benefits.
