Thanks to Jim Moylan, R-Guam, who visited U.S. Naval Hospital Guam for the recent hands-on preparedness training for proper response in the rare case of a public health emergency requiring treatment for radiation exposure or bone marrow toxic injuries. More than 22,000 medical staff from 80 partner hospitals have participated in this training provided by the Radiation Injury Treatment Network, a cooperative effort of NMDP and ASTCT funded through the Office of Naval Research. Diagnosed with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) at birth, Kailo was isolated for three months in the hospital and an additional three to six months at home. Today, because of his selfless blood stem cell donor, Kailo spends his time playing pretend "cooking" with his play kitchen set and just getting to be a kid.
