Deputy Administrator Sarah Morris delivered remarks about NTIA’s work with FirstNet and Next Generation 911. Thank you to the City of Pittsburgh for co-hosting NTIA’s Digital Equity Celebration! Assistant Secretary Alan Davidson and National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) staff joined Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, CitiParks, and the City of Pittsburgh Department of Innovation & Performance to announce NTIA’s Competitive Digital Equity Grant.        This grant will make nearly $1 billion available to fund programs that ensure access to the devices and skills needed to fully participate in the digital world. The event also uplifted local, regional, and nationwide digital equity milestones and featured remarks from White House National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard, Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, Digital Equity Director Angela Thi Bennett, and trailblazing community leaders.         NTIA State Federal Program Officer Nicole Ugarte Swanson hosted a roundtable discussion after the launch with residents, nonprofit leaders, and industry stakeholders.       Special thanks to Brandon Forbes, District Director, Office of Congresswoman Summer Lee; Bobby Maggio, Senior Advisor, Office of US Senator John Fetterman; Julia Brinjac, PMP, Digital Equity Program Manager, Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority; Lauren Connelly, Director of Economic Development, Allegheny County; and community members for attending.

Last fall, the Biden-Harris Administration assigned NTIA a critical task: Assess the risks and benefits of open-source AI systems, or “open weight” models for broad use. Today we released our findings. Recognizing the importance of open systems, our report recommends no government-mandated restrictions on the wide availability of powerful AI systems’ key components at this point, but calls for the U.S. government to actively monitor AI risks. This “monitor but not mandate” approach promotes innovation and access while also positioning the U.S. to respond quickly to potential and future risks that may arise. We also call for the U.S. to develop an ongoing program to collect, evaluate, and act on evidence of risks to promote both safety and broad access to this technology. https://lnkd.in/ejzM4qpk #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Technology #Innovation
