  • Today, members of the New York City Department of Correction gathered near the Samuel L. Perry Center on #RikersIsland to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the #September11th terrorist attacks.       On our nation’s darkest day, DOC’s Bold Heroes answered the call to save lives at the World Trade Center. Their bravery, compassion and dedication to emergency response also continued throughout the 9/11 search, rescue, and recovery efforts.       Today’s remembrance ceremony included the addition of eight names of #NYCDOC members who have died from World Trade Center-related illnesses to the Department’s 9/11 monument, which now honors 39 fallen heroes.       “I often share with the public that it takes a special person to join the New York City Department of Correction. In fact, not everyone has the strength, dedication, commitment, and vision to be one of New York’s Boldest. But on September 11th, 2001, our staff showcased what it is to be The Boldest,” Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie said. “None of these members considered or thought of the danger they were putting themselves in for the rest of their lives. Hesitation and second-guessing were unthinkable emotions at the time and because of their heroic actions on 9/11 and in the months that followed, many of our Bold men and women have left us too soon. Today, we honor them for all the many ways in which their lives touched ours. We also thank them for their bravery, dedication, and patriotism.”    View more photos at bit.ly/3XzKEGD. #WeWereThere #WeRemember

The New York City Department of Correction remains committed to helping the next generation of leaders properly prepare for their future careers. Today, our Summer Intern Eghan Zapata shares why he has enjoyed interning in our Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for the past two summers. Zapata, who just started his junior year at #BinghamtonUniversity, is an aspiring attorney. “This internship has helped me develop communication skills because I’ve been able to work with Correction Officers and learn how to help persons in custody. Before I started interning here, I didn’t know too much about operations in corrections and with this experience, I’ve been able to learn all about the hard work that takes place in this Department,” he explained. “The staff in this Department are very welcoming and I wanted to wake up every morning and come to work with them because this is an agency where people are working together to make a difference.” #ThrowbackThursday #BackToSchool2024

  • Here’s another reason why #NYCDOC has The Boldest correctional professionals in the industry: Congratulations to Officer Chin for becoming the only American Jail Association (AJA) Certified Jail Officer in New York State! Chin, who has been on the job for 16 1/2 years, is a Master Instructor at our Correction Academy and is known for his exceptional commitment to training and development. In order to attain the designation, he explained, he had to study for months for the certification exam, which consisted of 175 questions about the best practices across the nation’s jails. With this new certification, Chin has now advanced his career expertise to a new level. “This certification demonstrates my competency and professionalism in the field of corrections. It also indicates that I have a strong level of knowledge in the specialty and recognizes my continued education and growth in this field,” he explained. “I love working for this Department and I decided to pursue this certification because I wanted to put the New York City Department of Correction back on the map. I am proud to work for this agency and I’m also encouraging others to obtain the certification to help our Department remain successful.” #ICYMI: This past January, Officer Chin was the only #CorrectionOfficer in the country to be named as the association’s Correctional Training Officer of the Year. • As #DOC continues to celebrate #BackToSchool2024, we also wish our Summer Interns who recently returned to college a successful academic year. Today, Intern Carly Nadal shares why she enjoyed working in our Special Investigations Unit. Nadal, who is a sophomore at the University of Scranton, aspires to work in investigative journalism or law enforcement in the future. “Working with the Correction Officers every day was an amazing experience because I learned so much from them. This was my first internship and I was able to learn about investigations and even complete some interviews on Rikers Island. It was a real-life experience, one that I will never forget and it gave me reassurance that I do want to work in these fields after I graduate,” she said. #FlashbackFriday

  • #NYCDOC is continuing its efforts to incorporate electric vehicles into its fleet with the addition of three new EV Route Buses. The 2024 Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2s are equipped with the latest technology and are each designed to accommodate 32 passengers. On any given day, you can spot the spacious, eco-friendly vehicles being used to transport DOC employees to facilities throughout #RikersIsland. The heroes in the Department’s Transportation Division are taking the lead to ensure The Boldest employees reach their destination on #Rikers safely. This latest addition to the DOC fleet is also part of the Department’s ongoing work with #NYCDCAS as city leaders continue to advance towards the goal of an all-electric, carbon neutral fleet by the year 2040. “Our Department is very proud to have these EV buses. This vehicle procurement adds to our existing and growing fleet of electric vehicles, which is currently 61,” explained Director Kranz, who leads DOC’s Fleet Maintenance and Operations Unit. “It was a team effort to make this all happen. Officer Sala Della Cuna worked on this bus project from the very beginning and handled what was needed to complete the delivery to Rikers Island. It’s a great group of dedicated professionals who work in this unit and we will continue to do what we can to help this Department.”

  • Yesterday, DOC’s Division of Programs and Community Partnerships continued its work with providing persons in custody with education by hosting hands-only CPR training classes at the George R. Vierno Center (GRVC) on #RikersIsland.     Led by our partner in public safety the New York City Fire Department, the interactive sessions featured both hands-only CPR practice and basic instruction on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).     This latest visit marked the third time #FDNY first responders have visited jails on #Rikers to teach lifesaving skills to individuals in custody as #DOC continues to assist those in our care with preparing for re-entry into the community. #TBT
