We were honored to dedicate New York City Emergency Management Department 's newest command vehicle to the memory of Peter Bojmal and Anthony "Nooche" Pennolino, two of our agency's most dedicated Response staff members. While we miss Tony and Pete every day, their legacy lives on at our agency, and in their two beautiful daughters.

NYCM Chief of Staff Yokarina Duarte participated in the Diálogo Abierto program to discuss Dominican heritage and share her personal experience as an honoree at the Dominican Day Parade. She spoke about the profound significance of the celebration, reflecting on what it meant to her to march in the parade and be recognized for her contributions to the community. Last week, NYCEM staff presented on personal preparedness with a focus on flooding at the United Nations as a part of our ongoing partnership with their Crisis Preparedness and Support Unit. NYCEM staff were encouraged by the enthusiasm of participants, and we are grateful to the UN for having us! 🚒 Our I-DIEM HERricane NYC participants got an exclusive look at New York City Emergency Management Department's Emergency Support Center (ESC). From hands-on experience with emergency support vehicles to understanding resource management during crises, we learned how New York City tackles emergencies head-on. Some highlights of our trip included exploring the ESC, learning about Urban Search and Rescue, understanding multi-agency coordination, and of course, meeting Zero the therapy turtle (the real MVP!) The seminal New York City Heat Emergency Contingency Plan was developed in 1996-97 after the particularly catastrophic 1995 heat event in Chicago which resulted in ~750 deaths. This plan has withstood the test of the time. While I’m sure it’s been updated over the years years, New York City Emergency Management Department has activated the plan in recent days due to an extraordinary heat wave impacting the region.
