Uncover the mysteries of the Sperm Whales and their predation tactics.  For the National Geographic series “OceanXplorers,” our team of specialists developed a pilot sensor to successfully tag a Sperm whale in record time, which helped us learn about the secret lives of these magnificent creatures. Knowledge that will pave the way to a better understanding of the whales, and help promote their long term survival. In week 2 of leg 5 of our mission in Indonesia, we celebrated Indonesia's Independence Day onboard and continued our search for the elusive dugongs along the coastline. Tracking these animals helps us understand their populations and habitats better, making it a productive week of exploration and conservation. Expedition organized in partnership with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia, the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI), scientists from Sam Ratulangi University and Pattimura University, security team from the Armed Forces of Indonesia.

As the OceanXplorer made its way from Bali to Bitung this August, we welcomed on board 16 inspiring Indonesian university students as part of the sixth iteration of the #YoungExplorersProgram. Through interactions and courses with esteemed faculty and crew members, the young explorers had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about oceanography, storytelling, marine operations, environmental DNA, acoustic mapping, and ocean careers. To share their experience and messages of hope, young explorers learnt to use specialized videography equipment to deliver livestreams to their communities — enabling more people to access knowledge and stories about the ocean. #OceanXEducation #YEPVI #Indonesia
