I was up in Portland a weekend or two back for a friend's wedding and I managed to sneak in a visit to OMSI and Daniel Guyton very generously gave me and a few friends including Kyle Salzman a backstage tour. We got some fascinating nuggets about OMSI's commitment to making exhibit material relevant to Oregon. The group we were with, artisans of all stripes, was especially enamored of the Teen Tech Lab with a lot of “If I had only had this when I was growing up…” being shared by the group. I was particularly interested in OMSI's development of unique characters used on graphics throughout the museum to highlight exhibits and areas that support early childhood learning throughout the museum as a really elegant means of cueing visitors in their guest journey. But most importantly I got to chat with Daniel about his “happy accident” theory of manipulative cross-contamination (or is it pollination?!) which involved a highly entertaining discussion on plastic shrimp and their exciting journeys through air mazes. 🌬 🦐
