AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care covers OneOncology's announcement to acquire United Urology Group. In an interview with Mary Caffrey, Jeff Patton, MD said: "There are many areas where the combined entity can find efficiencies and opportunities to better serve patients. Areas of collaboration will include drug procurement, management of group purchasing organizations, management of radiation therapy, and clinical trials. Patton said the "union also works well because UUG has a well-established, physician-centered culture similar to what is found within the OneOncology practices." 🔔 Great article authored by Dr. Alan Lyss in Cancer Therapy Advisor about the barriers to biosimilar use. 🖊 Dr. Lyss writes about how the cost and complexity of biosimilar development, oncologists’ lack of knowledge about biosimilars, and interactions between payers, manufacturers, and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) can sometimes drive up the cost of biosimilars, thereby preventing wider use. 🔬 Dr. Edward R. Arrowsmith zeros in on the role of the PBMs and manufacturers and their interactions with payers. 🔎 As manufacturers contracted with payers through PBMs, Dr Arrowsmith says he and his colleagues observed two trends: 1) payers had a specific formulary for which biosimilar they wanted to use; and 2) An “average sales price reset” where, after the average sales price comes down, manufacturers increase the price “substantially, making certain biosimilars nearly economically nonviable for a practice. 🏹 Dr. Arrowsmith says this has meant that practices and institutions must assess changes to formularies and pricing regularly and potentially change the biosimilars they can use. 📌 To prevent this from delaying patient care, Dr Arrowsmith and colleagues now ask patients for consent for an entire therapeutic class rather than a particular brand name of biosimilar or reference product. 🔽 Read the article below. https://lnkd.in/dTuP4huW
