An Optics Express [#OPG_OpEx] study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology presents a technique for developing gradient back-propagation for practical inverse design for a range of previously intractable photonic devices: https://bit.ly/46S8YGC Existing inverse design tools based on finite-difference-time-domain models are poorly suited for optimizing waveguide modes at the heart of many photonic devices. To overcome limitations, this technique utilizes a general-purpose electromagnetic eigenmode solver to demonstrate that the computational cost of gradient back-propagation is independent of the number of parameters required for the optimization of complex geometries.
