What are the biggest challenges in podcasting right now? Podcasting’s stars and leaders weighed in–and it’s not what you think. Rachel Maddow, Bill Simmons, Theo Von, Ray Chao, and more identified the challenges holding the industry back. (Julian Sancton has the story for The Hollywood Reporter, link in comments) And just like Podcasting’s a garden of diverse opinions, these hosts all have a different idea of what to do next. Some issues: 👉 Discoverability, which goes hand in hand with another gripe–that everyone has a podcast 👉 Rewarding the risk-takers (which is another way of saying discoverability, but at the gatekeeper level) 👉 Advertising–getting brand investment in line with how much people consume content 👉 How to roll with the video-ification of podcasts Take a look, and you might find a lot of double-edged swords at play from these Podcast experts (low barrier to entry creates risk-taking at the edges but also makes it hard to break through the noise). The most popular woman in podcasting is making money moves 👏 2021: Alex Cooper’s show Call Her Daddy nets $60M for 3 years at Spotify 2024: Alex inks deal with SiriusXM for $125M Why the leap in value? Because Alex expanded her empire. Alex launched the media company Trending, and its subsidiary Unwell (a podcast collective) with producer (and husband) Matt Kaplan of ACE Entertainment (Reporting by James Hibberd, The Hollywood Reporter–link in comments). The Wall Street Journal just released an article featuring our groundbreaking PodLoad Report - "The Danger of Rising PodLoad: How Increasing Clutter Erodes Podcast Advertising Value". In the article, reporter Katie Deighton dives into the key findings from our industry-first case study conducted in partnership with Podscribe. She highlights the concerning trend of rising ad loads in podcasts and the potential negative impact on both listeners and advertisers. Some key quotes: "Ads in the second quarter of this year took up an average of 10.9% of podcast run times, up from 7.9% in the second quarter of 2021." "Research from Oxford Road and Podscribe found that the likelihood of a listener responding to an ad—by visiting an advertiser's website or making a purchase, for example—decreases as the number of ads per episode goes up."
