You’ve likely heard it before, but it bears repeating: The U.S. maternal mortality rate is 10 times higher than our peer nations, and Black women are 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. And 80-90% of these deaths are preventable. Yes, you read that correctly: preventable. Earlier this week, our team member Emily (Steinberg) McCareins had the privilege of attending the Black Maternal Health Caucus Stakeholder Summit in Joliet, IL. The Black Maternal Health Caucus, founded and led by Office of Rep. Lauren Underwood and Rep. Alma Adams, is tackling this crisis head-on. It’s one of the largest bipartisan caucuses in the House and has introduced the Momnibus—a package of 13 bills offering the most comprehensive solution to  address the maternal health crisis. The Summit was buzzing with energy and optimism. Here are some of Emily’s key takeaways: 🤲 Maternal health is a team effort: It requires collaboration, diverse perspectives, and unity. Whether that's in the form of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS-funded Illinois Maternal Health Task Force with 125 diverse perspectives, or what we do here at Partum Health: treating every birth experience as unique with collaboration between clinical and non-clinical providers, the emphasis on partnership is the key to lasting change. 🧗♀️ Failure is a stepping stone: Learning from past mistakes is crucial to making lasting change. 💸 $200M in federal funding is available: Now, we must ensure it reaches the families who need it most. Keep an eye out for grants, primarily HRSA and state and local governments.  ➡ Change is happening: The dedication and energy of those working on this issue every day make it clear that progress is coming.

We're so fortunate to have the support of World Business Chicago as work to increase access to comprehensive pregnancy & postpartum care for families everywhere!

I am thrilled to be participating in the women's founder delegation at RALLY sponsored by World Business Chicago! Indy - we are here and ready to meet innovators from around the region. Creating awareness for the fantastic work we do at Partum Health and building connections is a huge part of my responsibility as a founder. Yet going to conferences (even when they are in my beloved Midwest) can be expensive. This is why the support of World Business Chicago to help underrepresented founders access this type of exposure and make the most of it is so meaningful. Thank you Nicole McCarthy for leading this charge and ALWAYS showing up for female, trans and non-binary founders, and to your WBC colleagues Abin Kuriakose and Arantxa Valverde for all of the support.

On the heels of last week's groundbreaking legislative news of Gov. JB Pritzker signing into law The Birth Equity Act, requiring Illinois-based health insurance to cover services such as doulas, lactation consultants and midwives, we're proud to announce EMBRACE, Partum Health's first-of-its-kind Doula Training & Certification Program. EMBRACE emphasizes Partum's unique approach to doula support in a multidisciplinary care model. In addition to a well rounded, evidence-based understanding of perinatal care and birth justice, our program will also include expert-designed curriculum in the areas of maternal mental health, physical preparation and recovery, nutrition, lactation, LGBTQ+ family support and more. This training is poised to support aspiring and practicing doulas as they advance their careers, while working to develop a workforce that will help power the transformation of maternal health care that's underway. Almost 2,000 families have had doulas when they otherwise wouldn’t because of NYC's Citywide Doula Initiative. New York City is reporting that doula-assisted births have resulted in more favorable outcomes including lower cesarean and preterm birth rates. It is exciting to see the impact of the program which expands access to families in marginalized neighborhoods for doula assisted births. Max Rivera, reporter for THE CITY, also covered the challenges the doulas are facing and getting paid in a timely manner. Reimbursement from the city can take anywhere from two to six months, sometimes more. As more cities and communities expand access to doula care, we are paying attention to the systems put in place and continue to be focused on enhancements in pregnancy and postpartum care. Whole-person maternal care is on fire! We’re excited to announce that Partum Health is one of Chicago Inno’s 2024 Fire Award honorees. We’re proud to be among this list of 50 change-makers that are driving innovation in the startup scene. Our goal has always been to provide comprehensive care and broader access to the essential services pregnant people and their partners need. The fact remains that parents in the U.S. don’t receive the same essential care as our peers abroad, where home visits from postpartum specialists, in-home lactation support, and physical therapy are often standard of care. Partum was founded to change this reality. Being recognized for our efforts by Chicago Inno and Chicago Business Journal and being a 2024 #FireAwards honoree is one way to support our mission and help us set a new standard of care for growing families. Learn more about the @ChicagoInno @ChicagoBusinessJournal #FireAwards event and our fellow honorees here: https://bizj.us/1qlk9x

We're committed to broadening access to comprehensive perinatal care to all growing families. With this goal in mind, Partum is proud to announce that our maternal mental health services are now in-network in Texas with United Healthcare and Aetna. This work is a crucial first step in getting all of our interdisciplinary health care services included in-network provider plans with major insurers. We are adding UHC and Aetna in Texas to our already established list of in-network clinical providers in Illinois through BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Aetna. Please reach out if you’re interested in partnerships that can further expand access to this crucial work. https://lnkd.in/gFS2KV5F #maternalmentalhealth #parentalmentalhealth #MMH #parentalsupport #unitedhealthcare #aetna #perinatalmentalhealth #perinatalhealth #ifnotnowthenwhen

We can't wait, Brian Anderson. At Partum, we're committed to supporting growing families: birthing *and* non-birthing parents. That's why we're excited to host the first of many conversations geared towards supporting the health of new dads and non-birthing partners with community-driven sessions. At these informal meet-ups, we'll answer questions and offer new and expectant parents a place to connect with others in the same life stage. If you're in Chicago, join Partum Health Co-Founder and COO Matthew Rogers next Tuesday, June 25, as we talk about all things #DadLife with Fathering Together's Brian Anderson.

Shout out to all my Chicago friends. I'll be joining Matthew Rogers next Tuesday evening to talk all things "Dad!" It's been a minute (or 8 years) since I had a newborn, but when Partum Health reached out to invite me to share my experiences, all the memories flooded back! The long nights, spit ups and explosive diaper changes... but far outshining those moments were the first steps, giggles, snuggles, and exploring the world through the eyes of my daughters. So if you are free next Tuesday, swing by Bitter Pops at 6:30! #ExpectingDads #DadLife #ChildBirth #ReimagineFatherhood #FatheringTogether #PartumHealth

Partum Health is thrilled to be participating in the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition's Executive Founder Series. The ISTC team is doing incredible work to connect founders with executives at leading corporations - meetings that can otherwise take invaluable time and effort for startups to land. Having an organization like ISTC working on your behalf to build connections with large health systems, insurance companies, benefits providers, and more is so meaningful. These relationships are true difference makers for early stage companies. Thank you ISTC for supporting the startup ecosystem here in IL! We can't wait to see what unfolds.

Earlier this week, we introduced you to Meghan Doyle, CEO of Partum Health. Now, we'd like to share a little more about what her company does. Partum Health aspires to close the gap in maternal and infant health outcomes in the US, starting with a radical transformation of postpartum care for women and families with newborns. From figuring out how to feed an infant to healing from birth to dealing with mental health challenges, there is an incredibly common set of needs that parents face. The harsh truth is that despite how common these needs are, US families typically do not receive the full set of essential services needed to address their whole health. So Partum Health is focused on making continuous postpartum care from certified specialists ubiquitous, affordable and expected for all populations. Learn more at https://hubs.ly/Q02BbgpX0
