This month we’re spotlighting Public Enemies by New York Times bestselling author Bryan Burrough, first published on July 15th, 2004. We asked Bryan to share his experience writing the book. Read more below. #PenguinPress20 Long story short, I was in a bad place circa 2000, coming off two books that tanked badly in the marketplace. My agent introduced me to an editor named Scott Moyers. Scott asked me what my dream project was. I described for him the story that would become Public Enemies, saying this was stupid, that it would be viewed as too pulpy or low-minded. On the spot, Scott said he wanted it. We made the deal that day, as I recall, a matter of hours soup to nuts. Scott’s decision ended up changing my literary life, ushering in what (among family, who tolerate a writer’s ego) I have sometimes termed Burrough 2.0. The book was the great joy of my writing career, I just so adored the material, much of it stories I had thrilled to since boyhood. I purchased over a million pages of never-before-seen FBI files on the period (at ten cents a page!), which filled a dozen file cabinets in the garage below my New Jersey office. I then spent weeks crisscrossing the Midwest raiding archives and such, my backseat piled high with McDonald’s bags. When I gave Scott the manuscript, he made nice noises but he said it was way too long. I cut about a quarter of the manuscript in a matter of weeks; I have since estimated that these pages amounted to more than a year of work. But of course he was right, as he always is. The reviews were terribly generous, the kind that remind you how rewarding a writer’s life can be when everything clicks. A few years later, Michael Mann adapted it into a film, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. I visited the movie set one night in Chicago, chatted a few minutes with both Depp and Bale, who to my amazement insisted on remaining in character as FBI agent Melvin Purvis throughout, answering my dumb questions in Purvis’s lilting Southern accent. We ended up at dawn in a bar watching the dailies with Mann and his crew. I can’t believe it’s been twenty years. I’m still working with Scott and publishing books with Penguin Press.
