  • School refusal — where a child refuses to go to school on a regular basis or has problems staying in school — is a growing concern in New Jersey. In fact, according to Jody Kashden, PhD, Program Director for Child and Adolescent Services at Princeton House Behavioral Health (PHBH), roughly 10 percent of the state’s children in kindergarten through 12th grade are chronically absent from school. “There are effective ways to help kids who have difficulty going to school,” says Kashden. “The underlying causes of school refusal are most often anxiety and depression, but cognitive disorders, disruptive behavior disorders and addictions can also play a part.” Read more from the Princeton House Behavioral Health adolescent outpatient services including symptoms to watch for, how to be a supportive parent through this difficult time, and treatment options: http://spr.ly/6048WKm46

  • Mosquitos are very prevalent in our area this year, and a bite can cause everything from mild itchiness to serious infections like West Nile Virus. Penn Medicine experts share advice on how to stay safe: 🦟 Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. 🦟 Use insect repellent that that contains either DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol. 🦟 Use screens on windows and doors. 🦟 Avoid standing water. It provides a breeding ground for mosquitos. 🦟 Use fans at picnics and outdoor gatherings. Mosquitoes don’t have strong enough wing strength to fly in that environment. If you do experience a bite, treat it with Benadryl®, hydrocortisone cream (1% strength), calamine lotion, or an anti-inflammatory pain reliever such as ibuprofen. All are available over-the-counter. If you notice excessive swelling or develop a low-grade fever, hives, and/or swollen lymph nodes after being bitten, seek medical attention as soon as possible. It could be a sign of a more serious disease or illness.

  • When the Trenton Thunder minor league baseball team recently held Nurses and Medical Professionals Appreciation Night, Karla Weekes BSN, RN, clinical nurse specialist at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center threw out the first pitch in front of a crowd of 6,100 cheering fans. Karla is clearly multi-talented – she has great pitching skills and as part of the Clinical Resource Float Team at the hospital, she provides clinical education and support to nurses on various inpatient units. We have earned designation as a Magnet® recognized organization, the gold standard for nursing excellence, three times. The designation is based on exceptional quality and patient experience outcomes. Approximately 180 hospitals — less than 4 percent nationwide — have earned Magnet designation three or more times.

  • Physical therapy can make all the different in the world for people with osteoporosis. A physical therapist can help patients build bone and muscle strength, improve posture, and balance, and reduce the risk of a future fracture. At Princeton Rehabilitation, each patient is evaluated to determine their overall physical condition and a program is developed specifically for that patient, to help lengthen the spine, strengthen the muscles, and improve their quality of life. Physical therapists see patients in five locations: Hamilton, Princeton, Plainsboro (on the hospital campus), Monroe, and South Brunswick. Day and evening hours are available. • School buses will be back on the road again soon. Help keep students and drivers safe with these important reminders from our emergency services team. 🛑 In the state of New Jersey, motorists must stop at least 25 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended. 🛑 Motorists must stop their vehicle not less than 25 feet from a stopped school bus with flashing red lights when traveling on the same side of the roadway. 🛑 If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails, or concrete media barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed at no more than 10 mph. 🛑 Do not proceed until all the children have reached place of safety.
