Adaptive reuse is a process of taking a structure designed for one purpose and tailoring it for another. In the case of UT Southwestern Medical Center at Redbird, we transformed a defunct Sears into a clinic for a community that previously lacked critical healthcare services. To reinvent the former department store, we carved into it, reducing the expansive floorplate and introducing an open-air garden into its center. This brought nature and daylight deep into what was a black-box space. Clean lines and a minimal color palette create a sense of elegance across the facade and through the interior, while the addition of a generous canopy provides a comfortable entry for patients.  In this installment of The Fold, we show the thinking and detailing behind making this former retail environment fit for premium healthcare. Each post presents a focused look at the steps our teams take when thinking through design problems on behalf of our clients, going beyond finished photography to reveal the research, sketches, diagrams, models, mockups, and designer perspectives that go into translating ideas into realities. Whether it’s articulating a facade to complement its urban context or peeling back the layers of history to reveal the cultural capital of an existing building, The Fold shows you our projects like you’ve never seen them before.

Today marks the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women in the U.S. the right to vote after decades of hard-fought advocacy. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we also acknowledge that there’s still much work to be done. Our clients, colleagues, and communities deserve to partner with a firm that stands by them and advocates for them every step of the way. We’re inspired by the many influential women in our industry who are paving the way for a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. And we’re committed to moving the needle forward and building a more balanced world.   Swipe to see what #WomensEqualityDay means to our employees:

Inspired by the Swedish concept of “Lagom,” meaning “just the right amount,” this project embraces a lifestyle rooted in social consciousness, moderation, and sustainability. Guided by this philosophy, every design decision aimed for balance and simplicity.    The Swedish real estate company set out to transform a 1950s neoclassical site in Washington, D.C., into a modern, upscale workplace that embodies Swedish design sensibility—a human-centric, community-focused approach that promotes better living. Key features include a health studio, active design principles, and social spaces on tenant floors. The open office layout supports both collaboration and heads-down work, complemented by amenities like meeting spaces, a fitness center, a market, and an outdoor roof garden. Biophilic design elements, such as natural materials, biomorphic forms, and a two-story living wall, enhance the space near the main lobby and lower level.

Making Texas a Little Smaller: A plan to connect Texas’ two largest cities with a bullet train is underway. We’ve partnered with Texas Central to create a vision for a 240-mile high-speed railway traveling at speeds of up to 205 mph, with express trains arriving in 85 minutes at the Houston or Dallas terminals. This master plan offers a framework for future infrastructure projects of its kind—providing a route to advance the economy and prepare for future growth. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gRC3fvdv

The West Bund Dome Art Center is a versatile venue for performing arts and sports, housed in a repurposed concrete production factory that formed part of a 100-year-old industrial plant. The renovated facility is a key element of the West Bund Cultural Corridor masterplan, which includes several cultural buildings along the Huangpu River. Its transformation honors its industrial past while embracing a new future by preserving the dome’s original form and structure, adding a fresh internal framework to support the flexible program, and wrapping the volume in a new translucent roof that glows like a lantern at night. "From the very start, our focus was on restoring the dome structure and, in a way, trying to do as little to it as possible," says Chris Hardie, principal design director of our Shanghai studio, part of SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen.   For more details, check out the project’s feature in Dezeen: https://lnkd.in/eb_-x6bn

A fresh take on hospital design, this sustainable new health campus prioritizes both care and comfort, making it feel more like a wellness retreat than a medical facility. Atrium Health Union West Hospital in Stallings, North Carolina, is a hospital reimagined—a place where healing and hospitality coexist. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞: • A design that reflects the site’s layered history as a former farming town through a stratified framework • Three patient wings extending from a central three-story atrium, featuring earth-toned materials inspired by the agrarian context to create a more intimate, community-centered feel • Carefully curated local artwork that enhances the healing journey along a dedicated wellness path • An event lawn designed to serve as a communal gathering space • Salvaged trees cleared from the site and turned into custom furniture

Marine Gateway in Vancouver has reinvented the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD) to one that’s transit-integrated. While typical TODs are located around or near a central transit hub, Marine Gateway—North America’s first project of this scale—sets a new standard for building livable, mixed-use spaces by embedding the transit hub into the design of the community. The project’s success hinged on leveraging a planned stop on Metro Vancouver’s new Canada Line LRT system. For over a decade, we worked closely with PCI Developments, the City of Vancouver, TransLink, and local residents to unlock the site's transformational potential. Today, Marine Gateway exemplifies a carefully considered mix of uses, a high-quality public realm, and deep integration of multi-modal transportation options, making it not only the heart of a new community but also a global showcase of integrated urban planning and a model for future developments. In part, architecture is a process of negotiating agreements between interior and exterior. Tasked with designing a large expansion to a public middle and high school in Belmont, Massachusetts, we had to balance the charms of a bucolic campus setting beside a pond with the needs of separate academic cohorts who required spaces for learning and expression. We worked iteratively in collaboration with the town of Belmont, utilizing various sketch models, plans, and diagrams to arrive at a layout that optimizes perimeter daylighting and views while dividing the interior into flexible learning environments connected via a “main street” animated by student activity and project work. In this installment of The Fold, we show you how we took this project from concept to completion with the students and faculty of Belmont Middle and High School.
