I vividly remember the first time that Tesla issued an "over-the-air" (OTA) software update for its vehicles. At the time, people still thought of cars as static infrastructure. You buy a car now, and it will still be the same car, operating the same way, 20 years later. With much worse performance. Tesla completely disrupted that paradigm by showing people that cars can get better — smarter — even after you buy the car. They don't have be static systems locked in time forever. They can be intelligent. The data center industry is the same way today. How often does a data center update the underlying controls logic that was programmed into the facility on Day 1? How often does a data center upgrade its BMS / PMS system? In my experience, the software update cycle is similar to that of legacy automobiles — every 5-10 years. This is an opportunity for massive improvement. We don't have to be stuck with subpar control systems that do the same thing forever without learning. We don't have to accept stasis and degradation as the status quo. Phaidra believes that the future of the data center industry — and industrial automation more broadly — is truly intelligent, self-learning control systems. AI systems that autonomously manage the facility and get better over time at doing so, like human operators. That's why we refer to our AI control systems as Virtual Plant Operators.
