Guess what, everyone... IT'S A BOY 💙 Say hello to Jambi, our newborn, critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. Jambi, named after a city on the island of Sumatra, was born on June 26 to mom Tua and dad Sugi. Jambi is looking very strong and Tua continues to be an excellent mother, nursing and holding him at all times. Though Mom and baby are now exploring their outdoor habitat at PECO Primate Reserve, the two still make their own schedule on when they are visible to guests. They have access to their outdoor and indoor habitats where visitors can get a glimpse of them, as well as access to their bedroom space to spend time alone. Everyone welcome Jambi to our Philly Zoo Family! 🦧💕

The many faces of our precious baby orangutan 🥰 We're happy to share mom and baby are doing well. Tua continues to be an excellent mother and is in constant contact with her infant. Keepers say they caught Tua playing and touching the baby's little feet one day! Sumatran orangutans are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Stay tuned for more updates!

AMAZING NEWS TO SHARE! ❤️ We are over-the-moon to introduce you to our newest bundle of joy: a three-week-old baby orangutan! This little redhead was born to mom Tua and dad Sugi on June 26. We're happy to report the baby continues to look healthy and strong, and Tua continues to be an excellent mother, nursing and holding her little one at all times. We haven't determined the sex of the baby or chosen a name just yet. This birth is a huge conservation milestone for this species. Sumatran orangutans are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The baby’s birth is a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding program to ensure the survival of this species and maintain a genetically diverse population in human care. Mom and baby are currently setting their own schedule for when they will be visible to guests. They have access to their indoor habitat where visitors may get a glimpse of them, but they also have access to their bedroom space to spend time alone. The Zoo is planning to have their big public debut sometime in mid-August— stay tuned for details! And we'll of course continue to keep you posted with all the adorable updates. We are so thankful to our team of keepers, curators and veterinary staff who continue to provide incredible care to ensure both mom and baby thrive. ❤️
