As a pediatric healthcare organization, we are acutely aware that parents want to replace electronic devices with physical toys for their young children, hence the rise in popularity water beads. However, we also see the unanticipated negative consequences of what seems like innocent play. In this situation, the risk outweighs the benefit, as a swallowed water bead can expand in the gastrointestinal tract leading to health risks like blockages.
