Yesterday morning, our CIO of Opportunistic Credit Robert Dafforn joined Anna Edwards, Kriti Gupta and Guy Johnson on Bloomberg TV's Markets Today programme to discuss the dynamics showing up in credit markets: a pick up in default rates, expectations around central bank rate cuts, and the implications of a turbulent political environment. "Here we are in a period of very tight credit spreads. Volatility is low and markets are saying there is probably nothing to worry about. As a result, we're seeing new money being extended to slightly problematic situations. If you take that back to first principles, there aren't that many companies in trouble that need more debt, they usually need less. It really does help if you go through a debt reduction exercise in those periods". Rob discussed Polus' current investment themes and the opportunities for growth in the opportunistic credit and special situations markets amid the current higher rates environment. "We do asset-heavy businesses. Right now, the main places we're looking at sectorally fall in three broad buckets: real estate, levered cyclical exposure, and legacy distress.
