The heart of an athlete is strong, determined, courageous. Two patients who participated in Prisma Health’s HeartLife® program after undergoing a heart transplant showed they had the heart of an athlete when they took part in the American Transplant Games, which took place July 5–10 in Birmingham, Alabama. The HeartLife Program offers comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation focusing on diet, exercise and stress reduction. The medically monitored outpatient program designs personalized plans to meet the individual’s health and fitness goals. Allen Stancil shared his inspiring experience at the Transplant Games, saying, "The competition is fierce, but the camaraderie is genuine. Each recipient athlete has their own unique way to honor their donor and the donor family. For me, it's about training as if my donor will be watching, to show my gratitude through my hard work and preparation." Phyllis Jones echoed these sentiments, wanting to say thank you through her actions. "I want my donor to be proud of the forever gift she gave me. I want her to know I'm doing everything possible to take care of myself, and this experience allows me to show her my strength and perseverance. She lives on through me!" Allen brought home gold in discus throw and in mixed doubles golf and placed fourth in shot put; Phyllis received silver in discus throw. But they know the best award they’ll ever receive is the donated organ from someone who had a heart of gold. Thanks to Allen and Phyllis for sharing their stories, congratulations on their success and best wishes for continued health! #PrismaHealth #PrismaHealthCardiology

Donald Rhodes and his wife celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in a bit of an unusual way. Donald, a patient in the Hillcrest Hospital ICU at the time, was scheduled to be transferred to the Long Term Acute Care Hospital at North Greenville Hospital on the big day. Ali Hill, RN, and Donna Tinkham, RN, two members of Donald’s care team, learned of Donald and his wife’s anniversary milestone and arranged an impromptu anniversary celebration for the couple. The cherry tree blossom, the flower of the 53rd anniversary, is a sign of good fortune and a symbol of love and aspiration, so Ali and Donna used the theme of a cherry tree in their decorations. #PrismaHealthProud

Prisma Health is the first health system in the Upstate to perform a cardiac ablation procedure using a newly FDA-approved device. The pulsed-field ablation (PFA) procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (AF) is an innovative new alternative to standard-of-care thermal ablation. In a traditional thermal ablation, surgeons use a catheter guided to the heart’s interior, which generates high temperatures to destroy the specific areas in the heart associated with abnormal heart rhythms. Pulsed-field ablation relies on tissue-selective, non-thermal electric fields to ablate heart tissue and avoid damage to surrounding structures. Evidence indicates PFA therapy provides faster procedure times than conventional ablation techniques and minimizes risks associated with thermal ablation. Peter Netzler, MD, FHRS, led care teams performing the procedure using the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System at Greenville Memorial Hospital. “Pulsed-field ablation is an innovative and emerging therapy,” said Dr. Netzler, who is Medical Director of the Electrophysiology Department for Prisma Health in the Upstate. “We’re proud to be the first in the Upstate offering this therapy. It’s one of the biggest innovations in the field of electrophysiology in the last decade and will help us treat more patients, reduce complications and benefit overall health in our communities.” Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib or AF, can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Approximately seven million Americans live with this arrhythmia. #PrismaHealthProud #PrismaHealthCardiology

    W. Alvin McElveen, MD, a Prisma Health neurologist, and Leonardo Bonilha, MD, PhD, Professor of Neurology and Senior Associate Dean for Research at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, contributed to one of the studies of a new Alzheimer’s drug that may accelerate a new era of treatment for this irreversible, progressive brain disorder impacting millions of Americans. Dr. McElveen was the site principal investigator of the drug Kisunla, an injection approved earlier this month by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Prisma Health will soon begin treating patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage of disease, the population studied in the clinical trials. “As a comparison, multiple sclerosis used to be a condition for which there were limited treatment options,” said Dr. Bonilha. “However, in the past 20 years, we have seen a silent revolution in treatment options and outcomes. I hope dementia will follow the same path, particularly if we also promote brain health by managing cardiovascular risk factors.” The specific causes of Alzheimer’s are not fully known, but it is characterized by changes in the brain — including amyloid beta plaques and neurofibrillary, or tau, tangles — that result in loss of neurons and their connections. Kisunla has been shown to help the body remove the excessive buildup of amyloid plaques and slow the decline that slowly destroys a person’s memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to be left alone, to carry out simple tasks such as making a meal or using household appliances or even to speak. It is designed to be administered as an intravenous infusion every four weeks.
