🥳🥳🥳The Summer Apps Events are in full swing—this is #closingthegap in action! 👀**What is the Summer Apps Event?** Our mission is to help first-gen college students secure a job within six months. Currently, 65 recent graduates from Spring 2024 are two months into their job search. 🥳🥳🥳 It’s First Job Friday! Congratulations to Marcus Rosario who received a full-time offer as a Digital Strategy Associate at Publicis Media (Apex Exchange)! ➡️ Marcus said: “Before I became a Basta fellow this April, I was two months away from graduating and unsure of how to navigate the job market that I would soon enter. The fellowship provided me the tools (and the confidence!!) to succeed in finding a role 4 months later. Shoutout to Mel Dreyer-Rivera and Amber Field, Ed.D. for their assistance in helping me develop my personal narrative, cover letter, and so much more during Phase 1. Nicolette Cabbell, our conversations were so insightful during the job search and they kept me going when I was discouraged. 💡 The most meaningful thing I gained out of the Basta fellowship was the opportunity to network in a community of people who have a similar background as me. It was really encouraging to hear the success stories of professionals and it felt like I wasn’t alone on my journey to securing my first full time role. 📝 Something that I struggled with was with developing a professional network on my own. It felt uncomfortable to put myself out there, but Basta pushes us all to get out of our comfort zone and that was a great learning experience for me. I learned a lot from the opportunities to network with other fellows and professionals throughout various industries. Basta not only shows you the importance of networking, but guides you in taking those first steps to create your own. 💡 Advice to other first-gen grads: My advice to job seekers is that the way you respond to rejections will set you up for success in the future. Take rejections as an opportunity for growth; make sure to analyze yourself or seek feedback from others on how you can continue to improve. Don’t be so harsh on yourself, the job search is a marathon and as long as you continue to grow, the right opportunity will come.” Amazing advice, Marcus! Keep spreading the #firstgenmagic.
