It's Flash Back Friday! By the mid-1950s, Toledo Hospital embarked on a series of improvements that would continue to meet the needs of the community, starting with construction of a new wing, major remodeling, and a five-story addition built on to the north side of the hospital. New features include piped-in oxygen, audible nurse-call system, under-pillow radios. New service areas include cardiac care/postoperative facilities. Improvements brought hospital capacity to 447 beds and 71 bassinets. The 1950s kicked off a time of important firsts at Toledo Hospital's cardiology department, starting with the first heart surgery performed in the city in 1951. In 1953 alone, Toledo Hospital treated 1,703 patients from 33 communities outside of Toledo, firmly cementing itself as a critical access point to outlying communities, whose smaller community hospitals did not have access to Toledo's increasingly important improvements and highly specialized techniques.
