Redefine School. Defy Expectations.

About us

Propel Schools, a network of 13 public charter schools in Allegheny County, PA, was founded in 2003. Propel Schools transforms the lives of children through innovative, student-centered learning. Propel's schools are dynamic places where educators, families, scholars, and community partners work together to fulfill each scholar's comprehensive academic and fundamental needs. The academic achievement of our children is the central focus. We encourage excellence by focusing on reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Propel sets a standard for creating productive citizens, not just great students, by also prioritizing fundamental life skills. Propel seeks committed, passionate, and driven staff members who, first and foremost, want to make an impact on society. Fifteen years ago, Propel started as a dream. The dream was to build an organization with the capacity to transform public education in Southwestern Pennsylvania so that all children have access to high-performing public schools. Today, that dream is a reality. The first school opened in 2003 with 180 children, occupying a small hospital basement. In the 2017-18 school year, approximately 4,000 K-12 students attend our 13 schools in Homestead, Hazelwood, McKeesport, Montour, Munhall, Turtle Creek, Braddock Hills, Northside, and Pitcairn.

What a day for Summer Reading Center Interventionist Kayla Haile. She recently worked with Julius on reading and writing 📚 ✏️. After an hour of sharpening his skills so that his 1st-grade year would be an academic success, she walked him out to the parking lot to rendevous with his grandmother. You see, it was his birthday🎂 and he was heading to Kennywood 🎢. Our wildly successful K-2 Reading Initiative is based on the #ScienceOfReading and builds a solid foundation for lifelong learning. Summer learning...strong academic fundamentals...this are among the ways Propel redefines school so that our scholars can defy expectations! ⭐

Today, we'd like to shine a spotlight on the Propel Performing Arts Academy. This innovative Academy provides a platform for scholars to collaborate across Propel Schools and express themselves through different art forms. The program is a great opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in the arts. It also serves as a transformative journey of self-discovery and self-empowerment for many others. #PropelPerformingArts #EmpowerThroughArt

In observance of Juneteenth, all Propel buildings and offices will be closed on June 19. We wish our families, scholars, educators, staff, and community partners a day of reflection and celebration. We encourage everyone to take this opportunity to learn more about the significance of Juneteenth and its historical context. ______ Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and marks a pivotal moment in American history.

At the close of the academic year, Deanna Dugan, the Assistant Director of Propel Afterschool MAGIC, was present in the nation's capital to engage with members of Congress on the critical need for funding in afterschool and summer learning initiatives. Serving as an Afterschool Ambassador with the Afterschool Alliance, a prominent national organization committed to enhancing support for exceptional afterschool programs, Ms. Dugan underlined the significant value that Propel families place on the enriched educational experiences provided by both our Afterschool program and summer camps. Thanks to grants and the benevolence of donors, Propel Schools can further enrich scholars' opportunities through high-quality programming.

Welcome Desiree Matia, MFA! So excited to work with you in the EdD program! Patricia L. McMahon, PhD, Ann Bisignani, Sarah Zeffiro

Desiree Matia is the Director of Arts Education at Propel Schools. She earned an undergraduate in Art Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MFA in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design. This fall, she joins Carlow's inaugural EdD program. “I appreciate Carlow's close-knit community, one with the University's values embedded throughout. The structure and affordability of the program will allow me to engage as a scholar practitioner and apply my learning to my current role and beyond! I am most excited to learn from the professors and colleagues in my cohort, as I know their unique areas of expertise will help shape my own experience. I hope to research Social Emotional Learning in the Arts, and how that can impact school culture and systems of learning.” We are #CarlowProud to welcome Desiree!
