We often think about sponsorship by team. But sometimes deciding which rights holder to partner with can be tricky. Take a step back. When you group all 32 teams in the NHL into their respective conference division, a much clearer picture begins to emerge. For the 23/24 season we did just that. And found the Atlantic Division to be far and away the best division for generating media value. Which fashion houses truly understood the power of social media during the 2024 Paris Games? This year’s Games were certainly the best dressed. Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH), Ralph Lauren, lululemon, Giorgio Armani – the world’s athletes arrived clad in envious designer threads. But which fashion houses were truly able to harness the power of social? To maximize media value and visibility? Initially, it looked as if Team USA’s Ralph Lauren might dominate the arena. A well-coordinated, integrated marketing campaign saw the outfitter post 209 times to net $865K+ in media value – the highest number of posts across the ten brands we analyzed.  But, as with all sports, it’s not over until you clear the final hurdle, hear the final whistle, or finally reach the finish line. Dressing Team France, LVMH rose to the top step right at the bell. It only took one viral social post after the closing ceremony to turbocharge its ROI. 13.5M+ views. 1.2M+ likes. $640K+ in full media value.  The fashion house capitalized on Léon Marchand’s herculean feat to win four gold medals, shooting a TikTok video with Léon that celebrated his achievement. A French dream turned reality. Just like that, its total social media value rose to $1.1M+. But LVMH only posted 104 times, roughly half that of Ralph Lauren.  In fact, its Summer Games social content generated 17x more value than its usual content throughout the year. It is a lesson in how to use the power of social media to truly connect with fans during a massive sporting event. The majority of which are on Tiktok for LVMH. In third, came lululemon’s partnership with Team Canada – it’s second Games as the Official Outfitter for Canada.  It generated $93K+ in media value with only 15 social posts. Whilst studying the Games’ top ten countries by team size and outfitter, across brand and team posts on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and owned media, we also found something else.  Whilst owned and branded posts are certainly valuable...  ...joint, collaborative posts between brand and team performed 21x higher than brand-only.  Definitive proof that working together trumps all.  But if there’s on takeaway we want you to leave with it’s this: Broadcast may still be the breadwinner.
