Unlearning how to have a traditional HR career path is a journey of risk and reward. In college, Big 4 Consulting firms pitched me promising career paths through structured development programs. My education was all about building a career within large, publicly traded companies, which meant frequent relocations and constant career progression. Over time, I realized that fulfilling another company’s mission wasn’t entirely satisfying. I wanted to build something of my own while advancing my career. Yet, many companies had clauses preventing me from pursuing both simultaneously. Taking a risk without a safety net, I found my true calling: creating a company that supports others in building their careers and businesses. Respiris, our managed marketplace, enables Recruiters and HR Business Partners to achieve both career growth and entrepreneurial success. We use community, deep empathy and generative AI to enhance job search support for people in transition. This week, I’m taking some well-deserved time off to reflect on the gratitude I feel for the companies that trust us. We now also provide Fractional Recruiter and HR Business Partner (HRBP) support. I have always struggled with self-care. I don’t know why? I can hypothesize that as a first generation college graduate my parents never went on real vacation — even though my Dad worked for a publicly traded company. They didn’t take space for themselves or our family. Taking a real vacation is not something that I truly learned growing up. It is a muscle that I needed to build. I have had to learn to build and iterate. I made a decision to listen to the feedback of everyone asking me about what I was doing for self-care. So, I did it. Education is not an online sport. Today, I had the incredible honor of taking my daughter, Iris, to Harvard. This visit wasn’t just about admiring the campus, but about instilling in her the importance of setting a high bar and valuing education. Regardless of the path she chooses in life, I want her to understand that she is part of a larger community with a rich history and endless possibilities. Education is more than just books and degrees; it's about understanding our place in the world and the legacy we contribute to. Every year, we make it a tradition to visit Harvard and get a T-shirt, celebrating access and the spirit of learning. I am focused on building in-house revenue and partnership capabilities at Respiris. As Founder and CEO, I read all of my emails and appreciate the pitches I receive to help grow our revenue. However, I have no plans to outsource this crucial function. Currently, I am also reviewing the 3,000+ Recruiter and HRBP job search candidates who want to join our team. It aligns with our core value of enabling communities. This week, we lost a partnership deal to a company that generates $660 million in revenue and employs 8,000 colleagues across 66 countries. While this was initially disappointing, it quickly turned into a moment of reflection and pride. We competed head-to-head with a company founded in 1967, after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was established. WOW! The likelihood of me being able to build a company in the 1960s is slim to none.
