We are honored to partner with Marina Silva, Brazil’s Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, and the Serviço Florestal Brasileiro (the Brazilian Forest Service) in advance of #CoP16 for our annual MegaFlorestais meeting this week! 🌳🌱🌲 Why does this matter? MegaFlorestais is an informal network of public forest agency leaders collectively representing over 50% of the world’s forests. It is dedicated to advancing international dialogue and exchange on forest governance, the forest industry, and the roles of public forest agencies. Now in its 19th year, this week's meeting in #Brazil aims to accelerate learning + innovation to advocate for new policy decisions among forest agencies. #LandRightsNow Check out some photos from the field and stay tuned for more updates 👇🏽

  • ✊🏾 Afro-descendant Peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean are critical actors in the planet's fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Ahead of #COP16Colombia in October 2024, the Afro-descendant coalition of more than 100 representatives and allies has published 15 recommendations to gain a Voice and Vote within the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) framework. #LandRights4Nature Check out this interview with Colombia's Vice President, Francia Marquez, who is a critical ally in this fight for recognition 👇🏽 Watch 📺: https://lnkd.in/gR39nBsw Read 📚: https://lnkd.in/gJJD2yJA

#DYK that only a handful of 28 developed countries are currently contributing their fair share to the landmark 2022 Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework? Having collectively agreed to provide $20 billion per year in biodiversity finance to developing countries, most developed countries must double their 2024 funding amounts in order to help halt and reverse #biodiversity loss. As one of only a few countries close to meeting their fair share of international biodiversity finance, we want to recognize the leadership of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMZ) in providing funding to #CLARIFI to support the self-determined priorities of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendent Peoples who are implementing holistic solutions to address the global biodiversity crisis. We encourage all wealthy nations to meet their fair share of the Global Biodiversity Framework and scale up support for communities that are already playing a critical role in safeguarding nature. #LandRightsNow To learn more, read this new report commissioned by our friends and colleagues at Campaign for Nature 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/gBdpdKYf

  • 🎉 We're celebrating this week! RRI collaborator, the Indigenous Livelihoods Enhancement Partners (ILEPA), is the recipient of the 2024 Equator Prize for their land rights advocacy for the Indigenous Maasai in #Kenya. Selected from a pool +600 organizations from 102 countries, the winners exemplify the transformative potential of Indigenous and locally-led solutions in combating the climate crisis. They champion initiatives that not only protect, conserve, and restore ecosystems but also integrate nature into planning frameworks, preserve cultural heritage, enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change, and promote a fair, inclusive, and circular green economy. #LandRightsNow Congratulations, ILEPA! 📚 Check out the press release: https://lnkd.in/g-Ps5U5V 📺Learn more about the Maasai and ILEPA: https://lnkd.in/dvRK68Gi

  • On August 9, we celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples! ✊🏾 Today and every day, community leaders, elders, women, youth, and their allies worldwide are working toward supporting their communities’ struggle for land rights and sustainable, self-determined development. Why do community land rights matter? Up to 2.5 billion people live in community arrangements worldwide and directly manage over 50% of the world’s land—including much of the remaining forestland and biodiversity hotspots. And yet, only 11% of these lands are recognized as being owned by Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, or local communities. Scaling up efforts to close the gap in community land rights represents the world’s single greatest opportunity to advance global #climate, #biodiversity, and development goals. Getting this right also means protecting human rights and women’s rights. Learn how at www.rightsandresources.org. #LandRightsNow #IndigenousPeoplesDay #WeAreIndigenous
