Day 16 Desert Hike – It’s been only eight weeks, and already this tiny house in the desert is as much home to me as anywhere I’ve ever lived. Be it for a month, a decade, or a year, it’s all the same once I find my footing. New habits, new landmarks, new faces, and names—these quickly fill my life as the old habits, landmarks, and names of my last life fade. It’s a way of both becoming and being. Yumiko is like this too. Old places don’t suit us for long; we always long for someplace new. That’s one of the things that binds us as a couple, our restless sense of curiosity for the life unlived. I wonder if Japan can hold us? It’s not in our nature, after all, to settle or to ever put down roots. There’s Europe yet to call home—enough there for a dozen exciting new lives. But this experience of suddenly finding my true home—like all the true homes before—out here in a tiny house in the empty day and night and relentless upward living; well, that’s a thing to marvel at for sure as I plumb the depths of my values in search of a definition of “home” big enough to contain my wife and me for good. And maybe, at this late stage of our lives, that’s finally possible. #GoingAlone
