What's the deal with the big red ship that recently appeared on the Hudson? Last month, the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) began installing an energy transmission cable in the river designed to bring hydropower generated in Canada to NYC. Using the vessel “Atalanti,” crew started to lay the cable and perform related work in the Hudson. Read our blog post to learn more about the route, timeline, and what we've done to minimize the project's impacts on the estuary: https://ow.ly/c7J350Tk552 #HudsonRiver #CHPE #Hydropower #NYCEnergy #Riverkeeper

Our Habitat Restoration team, in collaboration with Mid-Hudson Trout Unlimited, tackled tree maintenance at McKinney Pond in LaGrangeville, NY where a dam partially collapsed. We stabilized young trees planted nearly four years ago and inventoried existing ones. These trees and shrubs are crucial for preventing soil erosion around the creek. As they grow, they'll provide shade to cool the water and offer vital habitat for wildlife 🌿💧 #HabitatRestoration #TreeMaintenance #McKinneyPond #TroutUnlimited

Last month, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation proposed new draft regulations to safeguard over 1 million acres of vital freshwater wetlands that currently lack protection. With increasing development and climate change, it's crucial these regulations are robust to preserve these ecosystems for future generations 🌿💧 You have the chance to share your feedback on the proposed regulations. NYSDEC is hosting two virtual public comment hearings on September 10 at 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM, plus an in-person hearing on September 12 at 1:00 PM at DEC Central Office, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY. ✍️ Send a note to NYSDEC to push for strong regulations to protect our precious wetlands and vernal pools: https://ow.ly/Xyng50TgCwo 🖥️ Register for the virtual hearings here: https://ow.ly/65Ip50TgCwp 📍 Register for the in-person hearing here: https://ow.ly/KjRa50TgCwn #WetlandsProtection #Riverkeeper #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalConservation

Our Habitat Restoration team had an amazing time hosting a recent community kayak outing in the City of Newburgh! It was fantastic to paddle alongside residents and partners Outdoor Promise and Crystal Lake Sanctuary Healing Gardens, exploring the Hudson River and Quassaick Creek up close. The Quassaick Creek, a vital tributary of the Hudson River, is a major focus of our habitat restoration efforts. We had the chance to share insights about our dam removal projects, which are essential for restoring habitats and supporting wildlife. A big shoutout to the Newburgh Waterways Center for providing the kayaks and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all! A special thanks to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for their support through the grant that makes this important work possible 🌊🐟 #Riverkeeper #KayakDay #HudsonRiver
