This past Friday, March 15, I gave the most recent ElonCARES speaker series with our fourth session through sharing my experiences navigating and moving past burnout, along with the skills I developed through that experience. Some themes from the talk: - Burnout is about how you FEEL, not necessarily your workload - Work life balance isn't realistically achievable 100% of the time. A healthier way to look at it may be to view it from a perspective of what you like to do vs what you don't like to do - Burnout has both personal and sociological factors. Both must be considered. We look at our patients from a biological, psychological, and sociological lenses, why should we look at ourselves as providers or future providers any differently? - Past maintaining general self-care, mentorship from many individuals helped me maintain my sense of self. An experiential activity was provided to participants to help foster a sense of being validated and encouraged towards action. This activity was designed with input and collaboration from connections in the Physical Therapy in Mental Health Catalyst Group within the APTA The ElonCARES Speaker Series is a new initiative that I started back in December 2022 to raise awareness on topics regarding stress management and burnout in healthcare students. We had 3 other sessions previously featuring different professionals in Physical Therapy that are trained in mindfulness approaches for students and professionals. Starting a new initiative like this as a student wasn't easy and certainly had its challenges, but I'm glad to have the experience, and I'm looking forward to taking the skills I learned from this experience to my future professional endeavors. This is only the beginning of my intrapreneurial/entrepreneurial ventures!

🌟 Unlock Your Potential: The Power of a Balanced Pelvis! 🌟 Hey LinkedIn community! 👋 Let's talk about a fundamental yet often overlooked aspect of our well-being: the pelvis! 🦴✨ Did you know that maintaining a balanced pelvis is crucial for overall health and vitality? 🤔 Here's why: 🚶♀️ Foundation of Movement: The pelvis is the cornerstone of our body's movement. A balanced pelvis ensures proper alignment, allowing for efficient and pain-free mobility. Whether you're an athlete, a desk warrior, or anyone in between, a stable pelvis is your secret weapon for optimal performance. 💪 Core Strength: A balanced pelvis is key to a strong core. When the pelvis is aligned, the muscles around it can function optimally, providing essential support to the spine and improving posture. A strong core contributes not only to physical strength but also to resilience against injuries. 🌐 Connected Well-Being: The pelvis is at the crossroads of various systems in our body, influencing everything from digestion to reproductive health. When in balance, it promotes harmonious functioning of these systems, contributing to overall well-being. 🤕 Consequences of Imbalance: On the flip side, an imbalanced pelvis can lead to a range of issues. From back pain and hip discomfort to digestive problems and compromised posture, an unbalanced pelvis can have far-reaching effects on your daily life and long-term health. 🔑 Taking Action: Whether you're an avid fitness enthusiast or someone who spends hours at a desk, paying attention to your pelvis is a proactive step towards better health. Incorporate exercises that promote pelvic stability, consider ergonomic adjustments in your workspace, and don't hesitate to seek professional guidance if you're experiencing discomfort. 🌈 Embrace the Journey: Achieving and maintaining a balanced pelvis is a journey, not a destination. It's about making conscious choices in how we move, sit, and care for our bodies. Let's empower ourselves and each other to prioritize this often-neglected aspect of our health. 🙌 Share Your Tips: How do you ensure a balanced pelvis in your daily life? Let's start a conversation and exchange tips for promoting pelvic health! 💬 Integrated Physical Therapy and Wellness #pelvichealth #wellbeing #movementmatters #balancedlife #healthandwellness #bodymindconnection #spine #spinehealth #schroth #scoliosis

Ok everyone is talking about Outlive by Petter Attivia, MD including Andy Pfeiffer, love the idea of "Your Centenarian Decathlon" is a list of 10 exercises you’d like to still be able to perform when you’re 100 years old. (He did say if you can't do it at 40, it might be harder at 100 😂 ) I'll start with: 1.Plank Lynne Ray will say for 2 minutes 2.Hike 2.5 miles moderate Please comment and add to the list. We can get to 10 together!

Total Joint Rehab Trends by APTA I've treated total joints at all parts of the rehab journey. And yes many of us can go home day of surgery. What I was not prepared for was physical therapy no longer being prescribed, primarily for Total Hips. You may be able to walk, but PT'S do so much more. What about tissue integrity, proprioception, higher level activities? Since we went to bundle payments, they are looking for ways to cut corners. Yes, we have advanced and we do not have to be in the hospital 3-5 days after surgery but do yourself a favor Request PT! It will pay off in the long run. Especially at independent clinics like ours and at home therapy like Gaitway of Charlotte you will not be disappointed. In 2000, the average length of a hospital stay for hip replacement and knee replacement was 5.72 and 4.38 days, respectively, according to the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Hospital Cost and Utilization Project. But today? Curry says more than half of their TJA patients stay only five to six hours. Curry, a board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy, chairs the Total Joint Replacement Special Interest Group of APTA Acute Care. Even with shortened inpatient stays, total joint replacement or arthroplasty can still be quite the journey for patients. PTs continue to play crucial roles in both preoperative and postoperative care, albeit with some modifications to their treatment approaches. Reason for Changes According to Curry, "Same-day discharge evolved out of a cascade of improvements in patient selection, pain management, surgical approaches, medication management, and rehab protocols." A turning point was in 2016, when the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services implemented the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model and the Bundled Payment Care Improvement Initiative, which changed surgery status for hip and knee replacement from inpatient to outpatient. As a result, hospitals received less financial reimbursement from Medicare unless it was shown to be medically necessary to keep a patient overnight. "This has given us an impetus to move patients efficiently through the care continuum," Curry says. For one thing, physicians and hospitals developed ambulatory surgery centers for patients whose post-surgical status did not require prolonged care. The centers are less costly to operate than a full-service hospital. Stephen J. Hunter, PT, DPT, FAPTA, director of internal process control for rehabilitation services at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, says that more and more total knee arthroplasties are outpatient or same-day surgeries. At Intermountain, he says, 45% of total knee, 35% of total hip and — depending on the procedure — around 35% of total shoulder replacements are done same-day.
