Leafcutter Bee (Megachile) – These bees are solitary, not living with a colony (or “hive”) of related individuals. Females independently find nest sites and provision them with pollen for their larvae to feed on. Most leafcutter bees nest in preexisting cavities, and some species can be quite common in urban environments where our structures can be chock full of suitable cavities to call home. Females line these cavities with oval-shaped pieces of broad-leafed plants that they cut with their large teeth. Older females sometimes have worked so hard at being good homemakers that their teeth wear down to little nubs from all the leaves they have cut through. Abbott’s Sphinx Larva (Sphecodina abbottii) – It’s a snake! It’s a worm! It’s a… tush? Yes, what you are beholding this month is the hind end of a caterpillar. But it’s a special hind end, it comes equipped with a fake set of eyes that somehow manage to resemble an angry Snuffleupagus! This defensive tactic is known as mimesis, as the insect physically resembles a different object; in this case the evil doppleganger of a beloved Sesame Street character. Notice how the actual head of the caterpillar is wrapped around and safely tucked under its menacing posterior. Red-blue Checkered Beetle (Trichodes nuttalli) – These striking beetles are known as checkered beetles as the adults of many species have alternating patterns of contrasting colors on their front wings. They can sometimes be found feeding on flower pollen, which makes for a striking photo! The larvae, however, lead a very different lifestyle. They are usually predators or scavengers and many of them are very specific about which food items they feed on. For instance, the larvae of Trichodes nuttalli, only attack the eggs of a particular species of grasshopper.
