A sponge city relies on more plants, green spaces and natural elements than concrete and impervious surfaces. As you think about your own backyard, the principles of sponge cities also apply as all types of plants and varieties of turfgrass absorb water and help reduce heat island effect.

The Elizabeth Street Garden in New York City is one of many that needs to be protected. Gardens and green spaces are valuable to our environment, and they help cool our ever-warming planet. Green spaces like this one represent our communities. They are a place for people to connect with nature and with those around us. They help us express and explore creativity, and they give us a place to grow. Surely, there is a compromise to keep the beloved park AND build more affordable housing. 

We’re heading into the weekend still in awe of this incredible Peruvian Giant Corn growing in our Associate Garden in Marysville. 🌽 A big thanks to our senior scientist Becky for bringing this to our campus! When she was a kid, she grew this same variety, which can reach up to 15 feet, and it quickly became a neighborhood sensation.

Picturesque may be the appropriate word to describe the late afternoon hike with our friends in the National Partner Network. Big Darby Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve and National Scenic River in central Ohio is a part of one of the most biologically diverse aquatic systems in the midwest. Naturally, the preserve served as the perfect backdrop for an outdoor activity for The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation’s environmental partners. We’ve had many thought-provoking conversations throughout the week, and it was wonderful to connect with nature along the way. #GroMoreGood #NPN2024Meeting

We’re so excited to be hosting our annual National Partner Network (NPN) meeting with The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation’s environmental partners in Central Ohio this week. Because it wouldn’t be an NPN event without getting outside, we’ll be exploring a nature preserve and an apiary in between all of the networking and knowledge sharing.
