Hotel prices in Paris for the Olympics are down 41% since last fall, indicating the event hasn't boosted tourism as hoped. Similarweb Digital Data shows a year-over-year decline in Paris lodging bookings from the top 10 countries, except for the US. This suggests that Paris, ranked 5th globally in international arrivals by Euromonitor International, doesn't rely on the Olympics. Visitors primarily come for the sights, culture, ambiance, and food, while the event's heavy security, initial high prices, and excitement might detract from these attractions. Interestingly, countries like Serbia and Croatia, with less usual influence on Paris travel, saw a spike in bookings, likely due to popular athletes taking part in the games. Last Friday, the world was struck by an IT outage caused by an antivirus update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Microsoft reported that more than 8.5 million computers were affected, while Anderson Economic Group estimates the costs to easily exceed $1 billion. As people scrambled to cope with over 5,000 canceled flights and system shutdowns affecting businesses, banks, hospitals, and airlines, they also rushed to search for 'CrowdStrike' and related phrases, as reflected in the chart below. The event, its consequences, and conclusions are still unfolding, proving yet again the need to track and measure digital data in real time.
