Construction for Complex, Sophisticated and Unusual Projects

Über uns

Our name is new, but our projects are familiar. We founded Singular to put our experience to use towards a better way of doing things — more complex projects, requiring more thought; more transparency; better communication; more innovative solutions. With decades of construction under our belts, we know what we like and what we’re good at: We love projects that require extreme and inventive technical wizardry. We love working alongside architects and engineers on the complex technical requirements of retrofits and seismic upgrades. We love logistical puzzles of mind-bending constraint — raising intricate structures in the middle of busy cities, phasing work in buildings, hotels, offices and retail spaces in which people continue with business as usual. We love the challenge of giving historic structures new life for the next 100 years. We love the exacting demands of the highest-end creations. We love every detail — and the work required to perfect them. Quite simply, we love complexity. Refined to its simplest form, complexity is high design.

Get to know the Singular team: Meet Mick Doyle, Superintendent. A 30-year veteran of the construction industry, Mick worked as a carpenter before he completed his undergraduate degree in architecture and began working as a superintendent for one of New York’s largest construction firms. Mick says: “As a superintendent, it’s about how you communicate, share, and work together. You have to create a good rapport with everyone on the team. That’s the essence of how to build well.” His ability to galvanize teams makes Mick adept at overseeing complex large-scale projects and site improvements. Logistics safety, and managing the critical path of a project schedule are integral to his role. “The thing I care about most is working with good people—people I trust and care about. You have to build relationships. That’s the essence of this work.”

Singular was founded on the idea that there’s a better way to build. To us, that means giving new life to old buildings and being thoughtful about the environment during the construction process. Singular is committed to sustainable building practices for a more resilient, low-carbon built environment. At Sandy Tatum Learning Center, for example, wood was sourced from a supplier that uses a Biomass burner to recycle wood waste. We are constantly working to minimize waste, reduce water and energy consumption, recycle and source materials locally when available. This Earth Day and every day, Singular strives to build a more sustainable future.

Get to know the Singular team: Meet Jose Virgen, Superintendent. For Jose — as for many members of the Singular Builders Team — construction runs in the blood. Jose grew up in a construction family, and from the time he was in high school, he knew that he wanted to go into the field. Jose started his career in the trades, becoming a union carpenter and then working his way up into project management. As a superintendent, Jose directs and supervises Singular’s subcontractors, keeping everything on task and on schedule. From outlining processes to choosing the right tools for the job, advising his co-workers is second nature to Jose because he has worked hands-on in the field himself. Safety is a number one priority for Jose, his crew members, and his job site. "I’ve never had a recordable injury in any of my projects in my 15 years of experience. I’m very, very proud of that."

Get to know the Singular team: Meet Nelson Diaz, Project Engineer. Growing up in the flatlands of Antelope Valley, Nelson was fascinated by the skyscrapers of nearby Los Angeles. A passion for design and engineering led him to the structural engineering program at UC San Diego, where Nelson developed an interest in building and information modeling (BIM). Information modeling provides a perspective on the entire construction process while still in the preconstruction phase, yielding valuable information for understanding time and material needs. That kind of data is essential to Nelson’s job as a project engineer, a role which combines project estimating and communications with subcontractors. With every project he takes on, Nelson enjoys being able to see what’s possible; he loves tackling complex problems and coming up with elegant solutions. “It’s always about being open to challenges.”
