Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the Union army advanced into Texas and Oklahoma and declared the last enslaved people there free. Today, we hold the words of American voting and women's rights activist, community organizer, and civil rights movement leader Fannie Lou Hamer close to us. America is a country of contradictions. It professes to champion equality and justice, but in practice, those ideals only apply to a privileged few. We will never bridge the gap if we don’t talk about and eliminate the systems of oppression that perpetuate it. This work will never be done, but we must commit to it every day, until every person is treated with fairness and dignity.

This year, Virginia's General Assembly kicked off with its youngest, most diverse class in history, many of whom are Sister District alums from our efforts starting in 2017! While celebrating this progress, we recognize that America still has a long way to go before the number of Black state legislators truly reflects the diverse communities they represent.
