To put this delicate model of the COVID-19 virus on display, a museum professional called a mount maker created a brass support to cradle the model in just the right position for display. Carefully supporting the model without damaging the delicate protruding notes, the mount is nearly invisible to museum visitors at our Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Are your hands full this back-to-school season? Composer and bandleader Duke Ellington wrote his first song, “Soda Fountain Rag,” as a teenager working at a cafe in Washington, D.C. Sixty years later, in 1974, a high school for the arts named in his honor opened less than three miles away. Co-founded by artists and educators Mike Malone and Peggy Cooper Cafritz, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts has since educated generations of young Washingtonians interested in the arts, producing countless professional artists and educators. How did soldiers, sailors, and marines vote during the Civil War? Through the mail, of course! In the 1864 election, military service members wanted to vote while fighting for their country. Ohio produced envelopes for qualified military absentee voters with either “presidential” or “state” election noted on the envelopes. In the 1864 presidential election, Ohio’s qualified military absentee voters cast 12 percent of the state’s ballots. Not every state in the Union introduced absentee voting for military men. Even in the states that did, restrictions on age, race, and citizenship limited voter eligibility. This envelope, sent from a Union army field hospital, contained a tally sheet recording the votes of Highland County soldiers for Ohio’s state election. Swipe to see an illustration, published by Harper’s Weekly in 1864 and in the collection of the Library of Congress, which depicts Pennsylvania soldiers voting absentee. Out of office message: this. Whatever this is, we’re choosing it over back to school shopping. Glen Fishback bought his first camera in 1934 for 39 cents, discovering an interest in photography after a friend snapped a photo of him diving. After working for the Sacramento Bee newspaper for a few years, he opened a portrait and commercial studio. He then launched a freelance career and directed a successful photography school in the 1950s. Fishback won many awards for his photography and shared his technical expertise by writing for photography magazines. The Archives Center at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History holds a wide variety of Fishback’s photos, many of which have an upbeat or exuberant look. 📸: Glen Fishback Papers and Photographs, 1930-1990, Archives Center, National Museum of American History
