Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden (“Snug Harbor”) offers dynamic programming in the arts, horticulture, agriculture and education for diverse cultures and all ages on a historic, welcoming campus that is a unique oasis in New York City. We envision being a nationally visible yet locally impactful cultural organization beloved by all who visit. We value artistic vibrancy, stewardship, conservation, inclusion, community, communication and discovery. Located less than 1.5 miles from the Staten Island Ferry and easily accessible by public transportation, Snug Harbor welcomes nearly 500,000 visitors each year to explore our gardens, grounds and galleries. Our 83-acre campus features 26 architecturally significant buildings and 12 distinctive gardens, including a traditional Chinese garden and a Tuscan garden. A vibrant cultural hub, Snug Harbor is also home to several non-profit institutions, artists’ studios and small businesses. Founded in the 19th century as a charitable rest home for sailors, today Snug Harbor is a growing, must-see destination.

Yesterday, we received the amazing news that Mayor Eric Adams and Speaker Adrienne Adams announced a $53 million investment in arts and culture for the coming year's New York City budget. This funding represents a crucial commitment to the vibrancy of New York City’s cultural sector. Arts and culture are not just integral to New York City's identity; they are essential to our economic vitality and overall well-being. Culture creates jobs, inspires students, improves the lives of seniors, and feeds the communities hearts, souls, and even sometimes feeds minds and stomachs like at Snug Harbor’s Heritage Farm! Culture provides so many services to New Yorkers that you might not even realize- like supporting moments of healing, grief and cultivating community joy and celebration. Challenging the workforce of tomorrow to strive and be ambitious, to understand that audacious dreams can become reality and that they can and should imagine a better future. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Mayor Adams, Commissioner Cumbo, Deputy Mayor Maria Torres Springer, Speaker Adams, Finance Chair Brannan, Cultural Affairs Chair Rivera, and the entire NYC City Council for their leadership in prioritizing arts and culture. Thank you also to Staten Island’s leadership for ensuring cultural investment reaches every part of the city, including Borough President Vito Fosella, Minority Leader Joe Borelli; Councilmember David Carr, and our local representative and city council warrior Councilmember Kamillah Hanks!! I am excited to share that Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden master plan has received the National AIA Award in the Regional and Urban Design Category! The Marvel team had a great time in Washington DC celebrating this honor. Congrats to all the winners! This project is very dear to my heart. It is the first project I managed at Marvel, and I had the privilege of working with a very large and talented team of designers and consultants. Working on a project of this scale is challenging, but having the right leadership, the right team, the right client, and aligned values aimed at making a difference is critical. This collaboration helped in developing a plan that is transformational, cohesive, built on community consensus, and has a pathway to implementation. Thank you to the National Building Museum for hosting the AIA Gala, coincidently giving us the opportunity to celebrate with Aileen Fuchs! As the project manager for the master plan, and more recently, a member of the Board of Directors for Snug Harbor, I cannot stress the continued investment needed to support the role of Snug in the Staten Island community.
