As I conclude my final co-op rotation with Southern Nuclear at Plant Farley, I find myself reflecting on the incredible range of development and leadership opportunities I’ve experienced. I’m deeply grateful for the chance to work on system monitoring, develop a new digital design lab, troubleshoot issues, and lead site tours. These hands-on experiences not only deepened my technical understanding of plant processes but also reinforced the crucial role of an engineer in the nuclear industry. One of the highlights of my co-op was earning my Irradiated Fuel Inspection Qualification, which allowed me to work closely with nuclear fuel — truly the heart of what makes nuclear power so unique. Additionally, completing the Initial Engineering Systems Training as a co-op was a remarkable opportunity. This in-depth, month-long training provided me with comprehensive knowledge of plant systems, setting a strong foundation for my future as an engineer. I’m excited to share that I will be returning to Plant Farley as an engineer following my graduation in May 2026!

“Nuclear’s Make or Break Moment” Important CNBC coverage. My take: The passage of ADVANCE Act through Congress by a 481-15 vote signals a new chapter for American nuclear. While nuclear construction projects are challenging to initiate, we must listen to the energy communities, state legislators, environmental activists and engineering professionals about the urgency of this window. Over the 80+ year useful life of these new reactors, nuclear energy emerges as the least expensive and most reliable source of clean power available. By investing in large light water reactors today, we can secure our energy future and unlock the momentum needed to scale American nuclear efforts with our allies around the world. It’s time to build. Yes, large construction projects are hard. Thankfully, nuclear fission is simple. America can create a sustainable and prosperous future, while guarding our grid and securing our legacy.

With the nation’s first new nuclear reactors in thirty years now online, more experts are recognizing carbon-free nuclear energy as an irreplaceable part of the solution to reaching a net zero future.

This week, I’m wrapping up my second internship with Southern Nuclear at Plant Vogtle 1&2 where I had the opportunity to be part of the Mechanical Systems Team. Not only did I develop and grow my knowledge in PWR systems but I also got to learn its key role in the power generation of the state of Georgia. SNC has proven that new nuclear can become a reality with Units 3&4 and I hope that this motivates more companies to invest in nuclear power. Thank you everyone for such an educational and fun summer! I want to thank all the COOPs and Interns from Vogtle and the Mechanical Systems Team for always being open to questions and providing opportunities for my development.

Another great semester spent with Southern Nuclear Company at Plant Vogtle Units 3&4 working with the Programs Engineering Department! I was again able to share all that I have accomplished this semester at the SNC Corporate Headquaters in Birmingham, AL. I have had amazing opportunities this semester allowing me to continue to develop my leadership skills such as serving as the President for the GA Chapter of the Students of Southern Company where I hosted Executive Board Meetings to plan events and General Body Meetings that allowed students from across the state to network and socialize. One of my favorite events was the National Intern Day event held at the Georgia Power Headquarters where we were able to have an afternoon of networking and even heard Kim Greene, the CEO of Georgia Power Company, speak about the importance of our Student Programs. I also served as the Co-Op Lead for our site where I organized plant tours for the Co-Ops/Interns from Vogtle Units 1-4 to Plant Tallulah Hydro, Plant McIntosh Combined Cycle, and the Vogtle 1&2 Simulator. I have also continued to develop my technical skills through completing projects mainly focused on preventative maintenance for equipment reliability purposes and outage planning. I am grateful for the unique opportunities that the Vogtle 3&4 team has given me and am looking forward to continuing my engineering career with Southern Nuclear!

Last month, our Birmingham chapter of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) received five awards during the NAYGN Continental Conference in Charlotte, NC. 🏆⚛️ Tori Bayush also received the Individual Achievement Award for her work, including organizing the Southern Nuclear Professional Development Summit, the NAYGN Fleet Event and her active leadership in the corporate chapter. Tori drove member engagement and raised total metrics – all while leading the effort for this year’s NAYGN Continental Conference. 📈 Bryan Moseley received the Individual Achievement Award. Bryan worked to establish a Fleet NAYGN mindset within the Southern Nuclear organization and increased executive leadership involvement. 🚀 The Birmingham NAYGN chapter received the Best Chapter in Professional Development award, Best in Region – Southeast award and Best Overall Chapter award! We are so proud of our NAYGN members and leaders for their dedication to advocating for nuclear energy through NAYGN! 🎉 #NAYGN #SouthernNuclear #NuclearEnergy #NuclearReliability
