This program allows high school and college students to serve in different areas of the hospital. The program allows students an opportunity to volunteer in a hospital setting and gain experience in patient care. Students in high school must be age 15 and up. Patient Ambassadors will be dressed in red polos and black or khaki pants. St. Bernards General Surgeon @Willie Harper, M.D. completed the hospital’s first da Vinci 5 procedure, a gastric bypass surgery. This procedure marks the first surgery in Arkansas using the Intuitive da Vinci 5® surgical system and the first bariatric surgery using the da Vinci 5 in the mid-south. This new robot specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures for urology, gynecology, thoracic and general surgeries. Since St. Bernards began a partnership with Intuitive in 2008, its surgeons have performed more than 7,500 surgical procedures using previous da Vinci iterations. Building upon 16 years of successful robotic surgeries at St. Bernards, this new, highly-advanced surgical robot will improve outcomes for patients and give doctors better insights and accuracy. The da Vinci 5 system marks the ninth robotic surgical system at St. Bernards Medical Center, the most for a hospital in Arkansas.

Fantastic first assistants make “firsts” exciting work at St. Bernards. The Advanced Heart Surgery Team performed its first Barostim implant this last week for a patient with heart failure. Assisted by Blake Elder, SFA and Faith Bevill, PA, our first implant was a major success! Designed to provide Baroreceptor Activation Therapy, this totally implantable device has been associated with improvement in quality of life and symptoms of heart failure in carefully selected candidates. Congratulations to the entire team at St. Bernards Health Care including our highly skilled surgical technicians, circulating nurses, anesthetists, clinic nurses, inpatient nursing experts, and administrative support team.
