After graduating with a mathematics degree from Duke University, Candace Howell began her insurance career in actuarial discipline. Years later, Candace was introduced to new possibilities by a former high school band teacher, who had embarked on a new career path with State Farm corporate. "This connection opened doors for me, allowing me to embark on the greatest journey of a lifetime as a State Farm independent contractor agent. Later, I had the chance to join the State Farm corporate actuarial team. I ultimately decided to return to my roots as a State Farm agent, opening an agent office in my hometown. While actuarial science will always hold a special place in my heart, I discovered a new love for being an agent.” Candace emphasizes the significance of connections as a State Farm agent. "Coming from a military household, I grew up with a deep respect for leadership. I was taught that true leaders hold the honor of bringing out the best in others. This upbringing sparked a passion in me to educate and guide others. Through my business, I have the opportunity to both learn and lead, as I engage with State Farm customers every day. "I take great pleasure in sharing my experiences and knowledge to provide support for individuals who aspire to become actuaries or entrepreneurs in the insurance industry. My ultimate goal is to assist customers and the next generation to feel confident in their future. This career has provided me with the freedom to do just that." "I've had times in the past where I needed someone to talk to for advice and support, and I know the importance of having a supportive network." July is Minority Mental Health Month and for claim team manager, JD, it is a great opportunity to raise awareness and share resources. State Farm independent contractor agent Marie Luetmer shares advice for individuals who may have reservations about pursing the agent opportunity. "Don't let the lack of industry experience hold you back – that is teachable! If you have the drive and ambition to pursue this career, go for it.” Prior to becoming an agent, Marie dedicated seven years to an advertising company. When the pandemic hit, this prompted her to reflect on her long-term aspirations. Over time, being far away from family took its toll and she began exploring new opportunities closer to home. “It was during this period that a recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn about the State Farm agent opportunity. There was something in her message that piqued my interest. Although I grew up with entrepreneurial parents, I hesitated due to my limited understanding of State Farm and its products. "Reflecting on my career as a State Farm agent, I am beyond grateful I took the leap! It has provided me with countless blessings, both professionally and personally, such as the flexibility in scheduling, the ability to choose who I spend my workdays with, relationships that will last a lifetime, and a full network of support that is there to assist along the way. "Interning at State Farm means I get to work alongside experts, make mistakes and grow from them in a safe environment." Lauren, a marketing department intern at State Farm, reflects on her decision to return for another year. "I initially chose State Farm for my internship because of its strong brand recognition and marketing achievements. It provides a special opportunity to recognize the unique strengths and contributions of people with disabilities."    Sandra highlights, inclusive environments create a more equitable and supportive context for individuals with hearing disabilities to thrive, contribute, and lead fulfilling lives.   "Being deaf does not change who we are. The only difference between you and I is that I cannot hear. We can still drive, watch TV with closed captions, and rely on light or vibrations for any alarms. I thankfully work with amazing people at State Farm; they make sure to always include me and for that I am forever thankful."
