We're thrilled to have completed the initial round of functional testing for the renovation and addition at Central Connecticut State University's Elihu Burritt Library. This project featured the installation of advanced HVAC systems, including a new DOAS, RTU, chilled water plate frame exchangers, steam-to-hot water converters, VAVs, and VRF systems, all designed to elevate the library’s comfort and efficiency. At SES, we take pride in partnering with schools and universities, especially with institutions like CCSU that play a critical role in shaping the next generation of engineers. Seeing CCSU alumni like Brian, who began as an intern at SES after graduating from the university and is now leading projects like this, creates one of those 'full circle' moments that we love to witness. Brian’s journey from a CCSU student to Project Manager at SES is a true testament to the strong foundation provided by the university’s programs. We care deeply about enhancing school facilities because we know these environments are cultivating the next wave of talented professionals. Seeing Brian and many of our other engineers thrive is a firsthand reminder of the impact our work—and their education—has on the future.

We are excited to start our functional testing at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School in New London! 🐋 The project's initial design began in 2019. This multi-year phased construction project consisted of a gut renovation of all interior spaces with a new addition and courtyard area. DOAS units, RTUs, VRFs, VAVs, lighting controls, and the emergency generator system are all included in the testing scope. #commissioning #buildingcommissioning

The wait is over! We have been watching the Opus Senior Living Community emerge from the ground from our project at the adjacent Coleman House renovation, and we’re excited to see that MEP rough is underway. SES is proud to partner once again with Petersen Engineering Inc and Dellbrook | JKS to deliver this project to our friends at 2Life Communities.

SES received a call from one of our clients about a dormitory that has been struggling with high humidity levels during the summer months ever since construction was completed years ago. Through a retro-commissioning investigation, SES uncovered control overrides, manual isolations, ignored freezestat trips and poor balancing that all contributed to negative building pressure and reduced cooling capacities of the geothermal system. SES was recently at Choate Rosemary Hall to observe the air vapor barrier (AVB) mockup and the foundation waterproofing membrane installation. Mockups are used to test how a specific system will be installed and how that system will be integrated with others. This involves aspects such as providing installation scheduling insight, showing which systems will overlap, and highlighting any issues that could be costly when installation is done on a full scale. Shown below is a partially completed mockup that will include AVB systems, insulation, and brick wall framing. Also shown is the foundation waterproofing membrane which protects the concrete from water infiltration. We were at Danbury Surgery Center to witness the testing of a 400 KW fuel-powered generator! Testing ensures if an outage occurs, backup power will be provided without issue. Typically, for medical centers and schools, it is vital that the generator will enable and provide power in under 10 seconds. This includes all transfer switches engaging and switching the power source from normal power to backup power. It is important to test the load capacity of the generator as well. The blue load banks pictured below were used in conjunction with the building load to simulate the maximum load scenario. This ensures that the operator knows the capabilities of the generator in hopes of avoiding unnecessary downtime caused by a system overload. The test was conducted successfully, and the generator was able to provide power in under 5 seconds, exceeding expectations! #commissioning #buildingcommissioning #backuppower #emergencygenerator

SES provided Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School with an infrared thermography scan of the flat-top roofing to ensure moisture has not been allowed to pool and become trapped under the recently installed rooftop ABV. Infrared scanning of your rooftop is essential in identifying problem areas and corrections that must take place before water trapped under the rooftop AVB can damage your building.
