🌍🔋 A recent Morningstar DBRS report underscores the financial benefits that Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) bring to utilities. It's encouraging to see a reputable financial analyst recognize how VPPs enhance grid efficiency and can improve utility credit ratings. Key highlights from the report include: - Revolutionizing the Industry:  VPPs are revolutionizing the utility industry by integrating renewable energy, improving grid stability and operational efficiency, and leading to better financial health and credit prospects for utilities. - Rapid Growth: VPPs, integrating diverse DERs, are growing rapidly, driven by increased renewable energy use and advanced technology. - Enhanced Grid Stability: VPPs boost grid stability, affordability, and sustainability by optimizing DER use and supporting renewable integration.  - Diverse Participation: Utilities can participate in VPPs in different ways to improve grid efficiency, integrate renewable energy, add capacity, and financial stability, which will have a positive impact on utilities’ credit profiles. As a company that works closely with a variety of utilities we've observed firsthand the positive impact of their creditworthiness from a different perspective, as it helps enhance the consumer financial products tied to DER deployment. This Morning Star report takes us full circle, and helps us see financial advantages of VPPs having a symbiotic relationship that reaches many stakeholders in the ecosystem. At Swell, we are committed to advancing this technology, ensuring that utilities and consumers alike reap the benefits of a more resilient and sustainable energy future. https://lnkd.in/eAe_dK8a? #EnergyTransformation #VPP #RenewableEnergy #UtilitySector #MorningstarDBRS #FinancialStability #Sustainability

Thanks Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables for analyzing and reporting on the record-breaking growth in the U.S. energy storage market. Through Q1 2024, deployments reached 8.7 GW and achieved a 90% year-over-year increase, with significant contributions from California and Texas. Key Highlights: Grid-Scale Storage: Nearly 4 GW were installed in Q4 2023 alone, shattering previous records. Residential Storage: Achieved a new quarterly high with 218.5 MW deployed, underscoring robust consumer uptake of #batteries. Price Trends: Significant declines in lithium battery cell prices are making batteries and electric vehicles more accessible. The surge in energy storage not only bolsters grid resilience but also paves the way for the proliferation of virtual power plants. Swell Energy is proud of our work to deploy energy storage while creating new value for customers and utilities through a variety of VPPs and different grid service models. At Swell Energy, every day we’re building virtual power plants and showcasing the diverse grid services and value streams available from distributed rooftop solar, energy storage systems, and smart load control devices that we install and manage. We understand that flexible load and advanced grid services are essential for the clean energy transition and building an affordable, reliable grid for the future. Recognizing the pivotal role of policy in advancing these technologies, Swell Energy joined RMI's VP3 initiative last year alongside an amazing cadre of industry peers. We're thrilled to have contributed to the development of VP3's Policy Principles, which are gaining media attention for their focus on driving VPP adoption and integration into power markets and with regulators. These principles align with our mission to promote innovation and sustainability in shaping a cleaner, more resilient energy future. #VP3 #VirtualPowerPlants #CleanEnergyFuture #Innovation #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/g4jZW6Qf

I love California – there’s plenty to like about sunshine and palm trees. But the state currently is dealing with a few problems that I’d like to fix. First, electricity rates are rising rapidly. Second, the reliability of the power grid is being challenged. And third, California’s NBA teams always beat my Portland Trailblazers. Fortunately, there’s a solution that can help to address the first two (sorry, Blazers).  Virtual power plants (#VPPs) can leverage the inherent flexibility in consumer technologies such as electric vehicles, smart thermostats, and batteries to help keep the lights on in California while putting money directly back into the pockets of consumers who participate. Our new study for GridLab shows that the market potential for VPPs in California could exceed 7.5 GW by 2035. That’s more than the peak electricity demand of Los Angeles, and more than three times the capacity of the largest power plant in the state. It’s also five times the demand response capability that exists in California currently. This is real potential. Our estimate is based on achievable participation rates and cost-effective technologies that are commercially available today. That portfolio of VPPs could provide significant net cost savings to California consumers. When deploying VPPs, utilities will pay customers rather than corporations for grid services. Our study estimates that payments to VPP participants would exceed $500 million annually by 2035. A residential customer with all four VPP technologies considered in our analysis potentially could receive incentive payments of $500 to $1,000 per year. If structured appropriately, even non-participants would experience savings. There’s still more to be done to achieve this potential, of course. Our study lays out several recommendations in that regard. Huge thanks to Ric O'Connell of GridLab for his leadership throughout this project. Kate Peters managed the analysis fabulously, and Sophie Edelman – our newest “flexpert” – became a certified VPP aficionado virtually overnight. We appreciated insightful review of the study by Feliz Ventura (Ava Community Energy), Rizwan Naveed (Google), Cliff Staton (OhmConnect), Brian Gerke (Recurve), and Sarah Minczeski Delisle and Jon Fortune (Swell). Lastly, something to keep an eye on: This month, the California State Senate will consider draft legislation that would establish the equivalent of an RPS for VPPs. It’s called SB 1305. As currently written, it would require all utilities to meet a growing portion of their future resource adequacy obligation with VPP capacity. It will be interesting to see how that policy debate evolves. Excited to highlight a transformative step in U.S. clean energy and climate action with the EPA's launch of a $20 billion investment via the Inflation Reduction Act's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. This landmark initiative aims to boost investments in clean power and zero-emission transport, focusing on supporting low-income and disadvantaged communities. It's a critical move towards reducing emissions, improving air quality, and creating equitable job opportunities. Many congratulations to our industry associates selected by the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund’s National Clean Investment Fund and Clean Communities Investment Accelerator. This marks a pivotal moment for our nation and the energy transition as the deployment of smart distributed energy resources enables more affordable and transactive clean energy opportunities. At Swell, we're energized to be part of this shift and dedicated to empowering communities with virtual power plant opportunities driving us towards a more sustainable and inclusive energy landscape. https://lnkd.in/e7MtgAFt
