"I think younger people feel a sense of urgency to solve big problems. They’re not ossified in status quo thinking, and they’re willing to work with whoever to get the thing they want to do done." Civil Society Fellow and former Ascend at the Aspen Institute Fellow Layla Zaidane is building the future of bipartisanship as the President & CEO of Future Caucus (formerly Millennial Action Project). In a new op-ed for The New York Times, Linda Flanagan argues for a minimum age standard for U.S. athletes participating in international sports competitions, citing the potential for harm that young athletes can experience in those high-pressure environments. She references the Aspen Institute Sports & Society's Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports, which calls for implementing a set of basic rights as guardrails in the design of all sport activities involving youth. Read Linda's op-ed to learn more about the Institute's work in advocating for children's interests in youth sports.

In 1949, Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke organized the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation in an old silver mining town nestled in the mountains of Colorado. Now 75 years later, the seeds that were planted at this first gathering have blossomed into the Aspen Institute and its over 60 programs that drive change through dialogue, leadership, and action. Many things have changed about the Institute, its campus in Aspen, and the big ideas that are explored at its gatherings, but what has remained is a belief in the possibilities of the human spirit and a drive to build a better world. Explore moments from the Institute's past and see how they compare to recent scenes on the blog at the link below.

Ryan Merkley has an idea: What if we made data available to the communities it's gathered from in order to benefit them? "Every day, from your phone to your computer to walking in the streets, there’s data being generated about you and your community. That data is collected and resold and used to provide services and to sell things. Now, that data could also be useful in spheres like public health or urban planning, but it’s really rare for that data to be available to the communities it’s gathered from and even more rare for it to benefit them," says Ryan. Read more in this interview with the Senior Technology Fellow at Aspen Digital and CEO of Conscience.
