Celebrating leaders who've helped make Baltimore and Maryland better over long careers, The Baltimore Sun’s Business and Civic Hall of Fame has inducted its ninth class. The 11 inductees include the founder of one of Baltimore’s largest minority-owned employers, a civil rights lawyer, a community-focused developer, boosters for Baltimore businesses and students, health care innovators and philanthropists.

The Baltimore Sun, which is owned by Tribune Publishing and serves as the flagship of the Baltimore Sun Media, is Maryland's largest daily news organization. Founded in 1837 as a four-page penny tabloid, The Sun publishes general news, business, features, sports and opinion. Under the motto "Light For All," The Sun has won 16 Pulitzer Prizes. For three months running, Maryland has had the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. The latest figure of 1.7%, from October, was less than half the national rate. If you're looking for a job or negotiating a raise, you probably like it, but the extremely low rate isn't necessarily cause for celebration. Vacancies and turnover are straining industries like health care and hospitality, and even workplaces that are fully staffed might not be able to grow, or might choose to grow elsewhere, observers warn. As for what's pushed Maryland's rate so low, economists point to another area where the state stands out: A lot of the people who left the labor force during the pandemic never came back.
