Earlier this week, actress Danielle Fishel announced her ductal carcinoma in situ diagnosis. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the earliest stage of breast cancer, which is why it’s sometimes referred to as stage 0 breast cancer. "We know that screening saves lives. The reason: early detection. The earlier we can catch breast cancer, the chances for successful treatment are highest. In the case of DCIS, 5-year survival rates are 99 percent" said BCRF Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Dorraya El-Ashry. "But this also highlights why we need more research. Research is the reason mammogram guidelines returned to begin at age 40. For her 33rd birthday this year, Kaity decided to hike 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) with a 33-pound rucksack strapped to her back, all in support of breast cancer research. Inspired by her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer over 15 years ago, Kaity is determined to make a difference. "I am so lucky that I get to choose my hard through training hard and doing a 33-kilometer ruck, she doesn’t get to choose her hard but sets the example every day for me," Kaity said. "So what better way to honor her than to use this ruck to raise money for breast cancer research?" Kaity completed the journey in seven and a half hours, for a total of 57,516 steps and $600 raised in support of BCRF. Today, we celebrate the extraordinary life of our late founder Evelyn H. Lauder on what would have been her 88th birthday. Mrs. Lauder was a visionary who recognized that research is the only way to eradicate breast cancer. BCRF is deeply honored to advance her legacy every day.
