The Hughes Center for Exceptional Children is a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) for youth with neurodevelopmental disorders. We also offer educational options and a private day school for students with disabilities. At The Hughes Center, we make it our mission to be the psychiatric residential treatment provider of choice for adolescents and young adults who are diagnosed with an intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder. We truly believe that each child is exceptional, and our compassionate staff are dedicated to helping each young person in our care live their happiest, healthiest life. Our residential and community-based educational programs offer structured learning environments with low student-to-teacher ratios and specialized programming with an emphasis on classroom ecology, direct academic instruction, differentiation, sensory integration, comprehensive evaluation and parent collaboration. Programming at The Hughes Educational Center is designed to improve socialization, reduce maladaptive behaviors and successfully transition our students to a less restrictive educational setting.

Welcome to the big top, where we are having two weeks of circus, carnival, and fair fun at the Danville Day School! Students and staff have read books about the circus, created wacky colorful tie-dyed shirts, and spent time showing off their acrobatics at the trampoline park (go Ms. Karen!). Students also visited Brosville Public Library for a Carnival Day!

The Hughes Center Christiansburg recently visited the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, located in the National Historic District of Newbern, VA. This visit highlighted the expedition of Lewis and Clark through the lens of the Civil War, and students learned about the history of plantations and slavery in the United States. The students and staff explored a general store and learned how farmers purchased goods to be used for work and in the homes. The tour guide shared the experience of the crop industry and the machines they used, with the students getting hands-on experience with a corn shucker and a weaving machine. The students also explored the main wagon road to Kentucky! The tour guide highlighted taverns, inns, and blacksmith shops where the settlers would stop and rest along the way. The students and staff enjoyed the stories and the hands-on experiences that truly brought our local history to life!

Students and staff at the South Boston Day School concluded STEM week by visiting Miriam P. Brenner's Children's Museum in Greensboro, NC. Students enjoyed playing on the huge outside play structures, "fishing" during water play, acting out plays in costume, and using their imaginations to cook and shop for groceries. They also loved playing in the rescue vehicles! We are so thankful to have access to such an inclusive space for our students!

Students and staff from the South Boston Day School took a field trip to the Cole Berry Farm in Vernon Hill, VA! We have been practicing our own gardening skills at school this summer, so our students were super excited to get to see such a large working blackberry farm in action. We had a blast picking and eating our blackberries, and we can't wait to visit again next year. Special thank you to the owners for allowing us to visit such a fun place!

Students and staff at The Hughes Educational Center Christiansburg have continued putting in the hard work for #MilesForMentalHealth, and they have now achieved 600 miles! How awesome is that?! They have crushed their goals, and they are setting an even higher goal now. Great work, everyone!

Our students with functional needs recently participated in a unit on dinosaurs! They learned about fossils, archaeology, and different types of dinosaurs. They used this thematic unit to guide all of their curriculum work for the week. Last Friday, they were even able to become archaeologists themselves! They took the fossil imprints they made earlier in the week and dug them up using their shovels, brushes, and magnifying glasses. We want to give a big shout-out to their teacher and supporting staff for continuing to find creative ways to engage them in real world career studies!
